Extermination is an early survival horror title for the PS2 and an attempt by Sony to capitalize on the genre.

Regional Differences

Each regional version of Extermination has a fair share of differences between them.

Visual

• By far the most noticeable change is our hero Dennis Riley, whose marine-appropriate haircut in the Japanese version is changed to him having a longer haircut in the US version. The European version, in contrast, stays more faithful to the Japanese version and keeps him as is.

• Furthermore, the darker uniforms that Dennis and his comrades wear in the Japanese and European versions are changed in the US version to a slightly brighter color scheme and its design is also slightly modified.

• The title screen and violence warning are different in each version.

• The main menu has a minor change: Dennis' information on the upper left corner was revised, eliminating his age and blood type and consolidating his height and weight into one line. A larger, easier to read font was used for this bit of text and his Engrish last name was changed to the proper one.

Localization

• Uncommonly for PS2 games, the North American and European versions each got their own English localization, complete with a different script and voice cast. The European version, which released six weeks before the US version, came with a more literal translation compared to the more Hollywood-flavored script in the American release.
• Curiously, the European version does not display subtitles for its cutscenes when the language is set to English.
• Even more curiously, the menu controls in the Japanese version do not follow the typical Japanese setup (Circle=Confirm & X=Cancel), instead using the setup in the US and European versions (X=Confirm, Circle=Cancel).
