Notes:Proto:Donkey Kong 64/GameShark Codes
This is a sub-page of Notes:Proto:Donkey Kong 64.
To do:
|
Since the demo is extremely stripped down and limited compared to the final game, a number of cheat codes are needed to access its unused content. If you're using BizHawk, then ScriptHawk does a few of these things already.
Contents
Map Codes
Enable all three of these at the title screen and press Start. From there, you should be (relatively) free to explore as normal. (Remember to turn off the warp mod afterward.)
Bypass the "Thanks for Playing" Screen
81592FCC 2402 81592FCE 0001 81592FDC 00A0 81592FDE 4825 8159370C 2402 8159370E 0001 815937F8 2402 815937FA 0001
Keeps the game from ending the demo after walking through an exit. Doesn't work if you die or run out the demo timer. (Other noted exceptions: map 06 exit, map 0E exit)
Warp Modifier
806F1CC7 00??
Takes you to any map, just like the final game's warp code.
Cosmetic Modifier
81605AE4 2005 81605AE6 00?? 81593168 2005 8159316A 00?? 815FE4E4 2005 815FE4E6 00??
06 - Jungle Minecart 08 - Dillo arena 50 - Test map 53 - Dogadon arena
Swaps out the area's background model; needed to keep the game from crashing when loading a non-demo map.
Active Object Modifier
For reference only.
To do: Replace with a list of problem maps and their fixes or something. |
8159319C 2004 8159319E 00?? 815931B8 2005 815931BA 00?? 81593208 2004 8159320A 00?? 81593210 2005 81593212 00?? 81593260 2005 81593262 00?? 81593370 200C 81593372 00?? 81593324 2009 81593326 00?? 815C8F00 2005 815C8F02 00?? 8166E054 200B 8166E056 00??
Technical Notes
Since this code is fairly long, it probably helps to have a breakdown of what each part of it does. If you're having trouble with a particular map, disabling a line or two might get it to work:
- 8159319C 2004 8159319E 00?? loads the spawn point.
- 815931B8 2005 815931BA 00?? loads level props & collectables.
- 81593208 2004 8159320A 00?? I'm not really sure about -- at the very least it seems to suppress intro cutscenes, handing you control right away. Without it, the area will load in "cutscene mode" (equivalent to soft resetting with the code on) which sometimes softlocks the game. Maps 25 and 36 will kick you out immediately when this is enabled, so remove it for those two.
- 81593210 2005 81593212 00?? loads cutscene data.
- 81593260 2005 81593262 00?? loads non-scripted enemies, NPCs, and possibly some events as well. Will freeze when used on the battle arenas and most bonus games.
- 81593370 200C 81593372 00?? loads music data.
- 81593324 2009 81593326 00?? enables the motorboat in map 6F (preventing it from crashing). Can't tell if it does anything else.
- 815C8F00 2005 815C8F02 00?? loads object/room scripting; prevents 04 & 1A from crashing but makes 1C, 1E, and 48 freeze.
- 8166E054 200B 8166E056 00?? differentiates between helper shop maps (01, 05, 0F, and 19) and regular ones, enabling the Kongs' unique idle animations for those areas. Dunno what else it does, if anything.
- Optionally, 81667504 2010 81667506 00?? allows control of Chunky when used in the Dogadon fight, if for some reason you want to use it there.
Other
8172CDAE 0017
This appears to modify the animation timing of 2D graphics. For whatever reason, it's needed to keep the game from freezing when trying to load Frantic Factory (map 1A).
Character Codes
Image Modifiers
DK: 80707DDB 00??
Diddy: 80707DEB 00??
Chunky: 80707E1B 00??
Dogadon: 8070AA9F 00??
Swaps out the named character's model while retaining his overall behavior. Uses the image ID list.
Actor Modifiers
Kong Modifier: 806F9EB8 00??
Enable at the title screen to play as the other Kongs/Animal Buddies. 06 is Enguarde, but it makes the game go nuts for some reason so it isn't listed. (Playing as Enguarde via crate works normally.)
00 - DK 01 - Diddy 02 - Lanky 03 - Tiny 04 - Chunky 05 - Rambi 07 - "Squawks" (actually DK)
Dogadon modifier: 8070AA9D 00??
Replaces Dogadon's actor with another character's. Retains his model unless used in conjunction with the image code.
Square brackets indicate the corresponding image modifier value. Unknown values that simply crash on load have been skipped over.

Moonjump
This is the final game's moonjump code modified to work on the kiosk version. It behaves exactly as it does there -- quickload to activate and then press L to hover. It can also be enabled on the title screen, but only for segment #2 (minecart). A requirement for going out of bounds and exploring the level layouts.

Map IDs
Parentheses denote the final game's values where they differ from the kiosk's. Values A5 to C7 load an empty setup with the Jungle Japes theme playing, which could have been placeholder data for maps that had yet to be implemented. All values past C7 more or less crash the game.
