Oddities with the Memory Management Screen
Accessing this screen on some models of Sega CD (especially when using an emulator) is really hard for some reason. Here are some tips for accessing it on all emulate-able models:
Japanese and European Model 1s and Japanese Model 2s
These models use UI Type 1 and have the easiest method for accessing the screen. On the Intro screen press A, B or C to enter the CD player UI. all you need to do now is select "option" to enter the MMM screen.
US Model 1s and US and European Model 2s
Accessing the screen on these models is slightly harder. You will need a Sega CD game to access it.
1. Enter the CD player screen by pressing A, B or C.
2. Insert the game into the console.
3A. If you have UI Type 2, then select the newly appeared "option" button on the CD player graphic.
3B. If you have UI type 3, the Sega logo on the CD player graphic should disappear and two buttons should replace it. Select the "Memory" button
Steps 1 and 2 can be swapped if needed, however on the intro screen DO NOT PRESS START as that will start the game. Just press any of the other buttons and the CD player should appear
CDX and Multi-Mega
Accessing the MMM screen on this model is the hardest since you will need both a Sega CD game and also a CD that the Sega CD will recognize as an audio CD.
1. Insert your audio CD* in the console. When the disc is recognized, it should send you to the CD Player UI (If you don't insert any CD, it will remain stuck on the Intro screen with a "No Disc" Error message)
2. Swap out your audio CD* with a Sega CD game.
3. The Sega Logo should disappear and be replaced by two buttons. Select the "Memory" button
It might be hard to swap CDs on certain emulators, because they don't have an option to eject the CD without also halting the emulation. Genesis Plus GX through RetroArch is an example of one that can, however if you use Kega Fusion or Gens then its recommend that you stick to non CDX bioses for this reason.
You can also substitute the audio CD for almost any CD that does not boot on the Sega CD. Two examples are: A PC Formatted CD-ROM and a Sega CD game from a different region.
Graphics Ripping Notes
Most of the Graphics are compressed using Nemesis Compression, however the graphics of the logos that are moved around on the screen are normally not. The exception is the LaserActive, where it's a mix of uncompressed non-moving graphics, and compressed moving graphics.
The easiest way to dump these graphics is to use an emulator that allows you to dump the VDP and Sega CD's Work RAM as a PNG. However the downside is that there might be graphics that are never uncompressed and are still left in the ROM and haven't been found.
