Pokémon Red and Blue/Internal Index Number

This is a sub-page of Pokémon Red and Blue.
I sooo want that binder.

Each Pokémon in the first-generation titles is listed according to an internal index number. Unlike in later games, the ID number does not correspond to Pokédex number. Instead, it may represent the order in which each Pokémon was programmed into the game, or an early order for the Pokédex.

Notably, while only 151 Pokémon are featured in the flagship titles, the table has a total of 190 entries, 39 of which are empty of Pokémon.

  • One episode of the Japanese TV show Game Center CX features an interview with Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri. During the interview, Tajiri shows off what may be an early design document or project proposal for the games, including three images that feature, respectively, Nidoking, Slowbro, and Kadabra. Each screenshot displays the Pokémon's name, their Red (J) and Green sprite art, and a number. The number does not reflect their order in the Pokédex, but instead matches the decimal number for their place in the internal species table, with Nidoking at 007, Slowbro at 008, and Kadabra at 038. The images could depict an early version of the in-game Pokédex function, as evidenced by the similarities in the layout, and the Super Game Boy borders faintly visible at the perimeters. Additionally, Nidoking's name differs from the final game: マイコー♂ (Maiko♂), rather than ニドキング (Nidokingu).
  • In 2010, a user posting on Smogon forums claimed to have spoken with Pokémon designer Shigeki Morimoto through a translator at a community event and received confirmation that 190 Pokémon were planned, though no other sources exist to corroborate this information.

While Mew appears relatively early in the list, with ID 0x15 (021), numerous sources indicate that it was the last Pokémon added to the game. As such, it's possible that its data was inserted into an entry that formerly contained a MissingNo. This may also have been the case with other Pokémon added later in the game's development. Thus, even if the internal index numbers do reflect the order in which the Pokémon were programmed into the game, or an early order for the Pokédex, some entries may be misleading.

For further reading about the remaining empty entries and the data associated with them, please visit the MissingNo. subpage.
