Mortal Kombat: Deception began development in April 2003 under the name Mortal Kombat VI. Like Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, it went through multiple changes throughout its development. The game was released in October 2004.

Early Trailer

This trailer is from the early stages of development and has many differences. It can be viewed in retail by selecting the video in the Kontent Gallery named "MK Deception Preview".

  • The fighting styles are different.
  • Noob has Havik's photo icon underneath his health bar, which makes sense as Havik's alt was originally planned to be Noob's alternate costume.
  • Most, if not all of the voice clips are reused from Deadly Alliance.
  • There are no fall scream voice clips from destructive environment attacks.
  • The HUD for Konquest mode was completely different.
  • The Earthrealm Village was simply named NewTown in this build.
  • Shujinko is referred to his internal name, which was just "Monk".
  • Chess Kombat was known as Board Game.
  • Various aspects for Chess Kombat looked different.
  • Puzzle Kombat has what appears to be a frame rate counter at the bottom of the screen, suggesting that the footage was taken from a debug build.
  • The dragon icon for this mode was taken from Deadly Alliance.
  • There is no grunt sound effect when being hit in Puzzle Kombat.

E3 Trailer

This trailer was shown at E3 2004. It looks much closer to retail but also has some differences.

  • The blood on the skull in the Bathhouse stage was colored differently.
  • The voice clips were once again reused from Deadly Alliance.
  • There is no aura on Li Mei when Ermac performs his Telekinesis Slam move on her.
  • The fall screams from destructive environment attacks have been implemented.
  • The beach stage looks different and lacks the lighting effects when the time setting changes.
  • Ability, Player, Description and Fighter text in Chess Kombat is different.
  • Target chess piece text in Chess Kombat is different.
  • There is no voice acting in Konquest mode.
  • The HUD in Konquest mode is different.
  • Deadly Alliance voice clips were used as placeholder grunt sound effects in Puzzle Kombat.
  • Some fatalities look FAR more brutal than what's seen in the final game.

Gameplay Trailer

This trailer is more complete and resembles the final game but has some differences, though there aren't as many as previous videos.

  • The fighters have their proper voice clips.
  • Fighter name text in Chess Kombat is different.
  • Bo' Rai Cho's dojo had a different appearance.
  • Additionally, the Konquest music from Deadly Alliance was being used as a placeholder.
  • Jax's Oh Yeah voice clip from Deadly Alliance is used when performing a special move in Puzzle Kombat.

Launch Trailer

This trailer was used to hype the game. It has some differences.

  • Fighters' name text in Chess Kombat is different.
  • A frame rate indicator is visible on Puzzle Kombat's select screen.
  • Kira's fatality ends early.
  • No Hara-kiri text when Baraka performs his Hara-kiri move.

Midway's Gamers Day 2004

Some gameplay was recorded while the game was being shown off at Midway's Gamers Day 2004. It looks pretty close to retail considering the event was in August 2004 but there's a few differences that should be noted.

  • Onaga was the announcer and had a different voice at this point in development.
  • Nightwolf had a different icon on Puzzle Kombat's character select.
  • Young Shujinko's model can be seen while visiting Outworld and the Orderrealm, suggesting that the models for his older appearances were not implemented into Konquest yet.
  • The Shifter on Chess Kombat had a black smoke while transforming into the player instead of gray.
