Early Trailer Puzzle

In the announcement trailer for NEO, an unused event puzzle can be briefly seen. This puzzle does not appear in the game files, but this was likely an early version of the first puzzle in the game.

Interviews

Early battle mechanics

Initially, NEO was only meant to be released on the Nintendo Switch. During development, the team experimented with a few different ideas for a battle system. One initial idea used the Joy-cons as a gyro pointer to attack and move the camera, similar to how The World Ends With You: Final Remix controlled when the Switch is docked. There was also a concept to use a command based system similar to fighting games.

Pin Psychs

Similar to a few pins from the original The World Ends With You, there were pins that allowed you to control map objects and throw them at enemies.

Expanded Map

Originally, NEO's map was meant to be bigger and would have included areas from Shinjuku.

Kanon and Ayano Role Swap

Initially, Kanon was going to be a Shinjuku Reaper and Ayano was going to be a player. Later on during development, they had their roles swapped. Kanon's initial reaper designs can still be found in the guidebook concept art.
