Prerelease:PaRappa the Rapper (PlayStation)
This page details pre-release information and/or media for PaRappa the Rapper (PlayStation).
Japanese Promotional Disc
A Japanese promotional disc contains a video of the game with some noticeable differences from the final:
- 0:14 PaRappa appears very large in Stage 1.
- 0:18 PJ Berri, Katy Kat, and Sunny Funny use different models in the cutscenes.
- 0:19 All the road signs in the background are winding road signs.
- 0:22 Completely different background.
- 0:28 PaRappa has an angrier expression.
- 0:32 There are no buildings or fence next to Phat Donut.
- 0:37 Chop Chop Master Onion has no transition to his bad mode animation, and slightly different eye textures.
- 0:42 Everyone's walking animations is different. This seems to be a version of the cutscene between the 1995 prototype and the final version, both of which can be seen below.
- 1:41 Neither Cheep Cheep nor PaRappa have any lipsync, and the eggs do not line up with their hands.
Scrapped Stage
The game's assets include an S4 directory that is completely empty, hinting at a scrapped stage that would've likely taken place after PaRappa gets a new car at the end of Stage 3. Due to this, every stage after Stage 3 is increased by one, meaning Stage 4 (Cheep Cheep) is actually S5 internally and so on. Concept art dated December 12, 1995 indicating General Potter was the teacher for the scrapped Stage 4. He only appears in the final game in Stage 6's opening cutscene, but would go on to have a much more prominent role in the sequel.
What his stage would've been like is unknown, and Rodney Greenblat himself does not remember. [1]
Test Intro, December 1995
On April 27th, 2022, artist Rodney Alan Greenblat posted a video on his YouTube channel, documenting one of (if not the first) intro tests for PaRappa the Rapper, made by Masaya Matsuura during the holiday season of 1995. This includes several differences.
Test | Final |
---|---|
- The video begins and ends with handwritten messages from Masaya Matsuura addressed to Rodney.
- Voices were done by Ryu Watabe, the game's main lyricist and voice of Chop Chop Master Onion and Joe Chin.
- PJ Berri has a pudgier mouth.
- Katy Kat's design is very different, having a different outfit consisting of a small yellow bra and hula skirt, small eyes, pink lips, and her hair being flipped the other way.
- Sunny Funny has slightly smaller eyes and has six petals instead of seven. Interesting, there are still a few scattered scenes in the final cutscenes where Sunny only has six petals.
- PaRappa's character design had not been fleshed out yet, instead using one of Rodney's characters as a placeholder.
- Jet Baby's movie does not exist yet, though Jet Baby can be seen on the theater sign.
- John Wayne is mentioned for some reason instead of Jet Baby.
- The sun in the background is different.
- The green building beside the theater does not exist.
- There is no exterior shot of the Chunky Burger building.
- Different cashier, tables and carpet.
- No customers are in the store.
- The characters' food orders are all different, save for PaRappa, who still orders water.
