Removed Items

Spaceworld 1997 Items
These are in the same slots and have the same names as items from the Spaceworld 1997 demo. These items exist in name only, with placeholder attributes and null effects. A few did, however, receive slightly different names:

Detect Orb & Poison Stone
These two items from Spaceworld 1997 initially made the cut before getting removed by the next group. The Detect Orb raises the player's evasion as expected with item effect 25, which otherwise goes completely unused. The Poison Stone has the same usage flag as the other evolutionary stones, but no Pokémon have it listed as an evolution method.

Valuable Item Groups
There are at least twelve items which appear to form valuable item pairs, much like the Tinymushroom/Big Mushroom and Stardust/Star Piece pairs in the final games. They're listed below along with the Pokémon families that might have been meant to carry them:

  • The Mystic Thread and Mystic Needle for the Norowara line.
  • The Spoon and Twistedspoon for the Abra line.
  • The Pebble and Big Stone for the Geodude line.
  • The Torn Collar and Crushed Tire for the Houndour line.
  • The Dirty Bell and Broken Pan for an unknown line.
  • The Tiny Scales and Steel Scales for the Onix line.

Cut After Group 3

Pokémon brought over from a Generation I game via the Time Capsule will have a held item attached, and that ID of that item is equal to the Pokémon's catch rate. This feature had been planned since at least Spaceworld 1997. The slots for catch rate items are marked しようきんし, or Don't Use. Group 3 is the first to put something in those slots, with items like Leftovers, Lucky Punch, and Metal Powder. What's strange here is the seven duplicates of Berry, along with two duplicates of Gold Berry and one of Bitter Berry.

These are very likely oversights, as it's not hard to imagine the problems that would arise if this were actually implemented, like the Berries being unable to stack with each other, clogging up inventory space. Thankfully, someone on the development team realized how bad of an idea this was, deleted the Berry duplicates, and implemented a simple lookup table instead.

Cut After Group 5

Tickle Stick & Voucher

Item Description Translation
Tickle Stick せなかを こちょこちょ すると
とっても きもちが いい
It feels great to have
your back tickled.
Voucher ラジオカードの ひきかえけん Radio Card voucher.

Two new key items that were both cut sometime between August 18th and August 23rd; it doesn't seem like either of them was ever placed or implemented in the game.

  • The description of the Tickle Stick mentions that it feels good when you use it on a person's back. The player had to rub the S.S. Anne's captain's back in Generation I, so this might have been meant for a similar event on the S.S. Aqua.
  • The Voucher would have been an extra step to get the Radio Card in Goldenrod City. In the final games, the player gets the Radio Card straight away after completing a quiz in the Goldenrod Radio Tower.

Honey Pot

Date Description Translation
1999/07/17 あまーい みつを ためる つぼ
みつの においが しみついている
A pot for storing SWEET HONEY.
It has an ingrained honey scent.
1999/08/04 あまーい ミツを ためる つぼ
ミツの においが しみついている
A pot for storing SWEET HONEY.
It has an ingrained honey scent.

According to p20430.txt, the Honey Pot and Sweet Honey were first implemented on or before April 30th. Commented-out code in SOURCE\ITEMBOX.DMG gives a complete rundown on how this item would work:

Context Description Translation
Use (Success) <PLAYER>は ミツを
きのみきに ぬった!
<PLAYER> spread
honey on the tree!
Use (Failure) ミツを きに ぬろうとした......
しかし つぼの なかは
からっぽ だった!
Tried to spread
honey... But the
pot was empty!
  • The code that handles using the item is found in the subroutine "HoneyPot". The player would be able to use this item on a single Headbutt tree; there are different messages depending on whether the player actually has any Sweet Honey in the Honey Pot.
Context Description Translation
Tree (Same Day) ここには きょう ミツ
ぬったぞ!
You spread honey
here today!
Tree (Next Day) このきには きのう ミツ
ぬったぞ!
You spread honey
here yesterday!
  • The subroutine "HoneyTreeCheck" would give the player a message when they inspected the honey-smeared tree, with the message changing depending on when the player poured the honey.
  • "ShakeEncRateCheck" would check whether a day had passed since the player applied honey to the tree. If true, that tree would have encounters 100% of the time and would always use the rare encounter table, regardless of the tree's X/Y position. After another day, the tree would return back to normal.

According to the item XLS sheets, the Honey Pot would have been found in the Goldenrod Department Store basement, and according to text found in the final Gold and Silver ROMs, the woman that gives the TM for Sweet Scent originally gave out Sweet Honey. By August 5th (file p20805.txt), all data related to Sweet Honey had been dummied out. Nevertheless, the Honey Pot item managed to stick around for a bit longer until it was finally deleted sometime between August 18th and August 23rd. Trying to use it in the Spaceworld 1999 demo gives Oak's standard "can't use this" error message.

Proof of Adulthood

Description Translation
もっている だけで
おとなっぽく みえる
Just holding it makes you
feel more like an adult.

A mysterious key item of unclear purpose that was removed from the game at the same time as the Tickle Stick and the Voucher.

Cut After Group 6

Life Berry

Description Translation
たいりょくが 1の じょうたいで
ひんしじょうたいから かいふくする
Recover with 1 HP
after fainting.

The Life Berry was the original item attached to transferred Generation I Legendaries, acting like an ersatz version of the Focus Sash from Generation IV. The Life Berry is assigned item effect 5 with a power of 1, which is supposed to revive a Pokémon with 1 HP when held. While this is what the effect would do in the 1997 demo, by April of 1999 the effect's code had already been removed.

According to p20922.txt, the Life Berry was replaced by Brightpowder on September 21st. The two reasons for its replacement: consideration of game balance, and the small problem of the effect's nonexistence. That last one might be more important.

Town Map

Description Translation
マップを みることが できる Use to view the map.

The Town Map is an item from Generation I that made it into the 1999 version of Gold & Silver despite having been obsoleted by the Pokégear even in the 1997 version. Trying to use it in the Spaceworld 1999 demo will replay the last overworld event (flying to town, using a fishing rod, using the Itemfinder, etc.) instead of bringing up the map.

Though its name and description were later deleted, there's some leftover code for the Town Map in the final games.

Poké Flute

Description Translation
ねむっている ポケモンを おこす Awakens sleeping Pokémon.

The Poké Flute is another Generation I holdover. Using it on the overworld will prompt the "Now that's a catchy tune!" message, unless the player has at least one sleeping Pokémon, in which case the Poké Flute tune will play and Pokémon will wake up. Like the Town Map, using this on the overworld will replay the last overworld event. Using it in battle will always print the catchy tune message even if the current Pokémon is asleep, but it'll still wake that Pokémon up. The Poké Flute tune will not play when used in battle.

Its role in the story (waking up Snorlax) was replaced by the Pokégear's Poké Flute radio station. All of the flute's use text as well as some of the code was left in the final game.

Oak's Parcel

Description Translation
オーキドはかせ から
ウツギはかせ への おとどけもの
Delivery from PROF. OAK
to PROF. ELM

Oak's Parcel is the last of the holdover Generation I key items. Instead of being a delivery to Professor Oak, this would be a delivery from Professor Oak to Professor Elm. Trying to use it in the Spaceworld 1999 demo will produce the standard Professor Oak error message, even though this item has special use text that even managed to make its way into the final games.

(Translation: Rangi)

Item Changes

Original Apricorn Balls

Dummied code in USEITEM.DMG reveals that three of the Apricorn Balls were changed some time before July 5th:

  • The Direct Ball took the Pokémon's catch rate and multiplied it by 2/3, then used the result as the final catch chance, bypassing the HP and status modifiers normally used in the catch formula. This was replaced by the Level Ball, but the code that made the Direct Ball skip HP and status conditions was left in even after it was replaced; it's not clear if this was intentional or if they just forgot to delete the check.
  • The Night Ball had a 3x catch rate at night, and otherwise did nothing. This was replaced by the Fast Ball, but it was reintroduced in a stronger form as the Dusk Ball in Generation IV.
  • The Love Ball made it into the game, but there's commented-out code in USEITEM.DMG (directly under pop_ret$) that shows the Love Ball originally worked quite differently.
  • The ball had a 4x catch rate multiplier when used on any of the following Pokémon:
Sandshrew Sandslash Paras Parasect Slowpoke Slowbro Geodude Grimer Muk Exeggutor
Lickitung Jynx Magikarp Porygon Elekid Granbull Unown Norowara Bellossom Mankey
  • Otherwise, the ball had a 0.25x catch rate multiplier.
The table of Pokémon is labeled "gantetsu_tbl", and a comment on the jump to the 0.25x subroutine is "ガンテツの好きなポケモンでない" or "Not Kurt's favorite Pokémon.", so it seems the original intention of the Love Ball was for it be more effective on Kurt's most beloved Pokémon. (Nevermind the fact that Parasect, Exeggutor, Porygon, Granbull, and Bellossom can't be found in the wild.)

Mobile Mail

Mobile Mail Bluesky Mail
PokemonGSMail07S.png PokemonGSMail07F.png

While first named in Group 5, the code and graphics for this mail already exist in the Spaceworld 1999 demo. The mail design is completely different from the Bluesky Mail in the final game, decorated with the triangle and squares seen in the Surf and Litebluemail, with a pair of cell phones flanking the player's signature. A rather unimpressive design, which is likely why it was changed.

Removed Held Item Effects

There are a good number of consumable items that only have held item effects in the April 28th list. It was decided at some point between April and July that Pokémon would only be able to consume "natural" items, which is why Group 2 introduced so many different berries. Thus, man-made consumables like potions and status-healing sprays had their effects removed.

Gold Berry 1999/04/28 Recovers 50 HP.
1999/07/17 Recovers 30 HP.

Worth noting are the following changes:

  • By June 17th, the Gold Berry had its recovery nerfed from 50 HP to 30 HP.
  • None of the Pokémon-specific hold items (Lucky Punch, Metal Powder, Stick, Thick Club, Light Ball) did anything until around August 17th, when Metal Powder finally had its effects added. The other four were implemented between August 17th and September 30th.
  • Sometime around August 23rd, King's Rock and Focus Band had their effect rates increased by 50%, while Quick Claw had its effect rate tripled.
  • On August 29th, items that cured all non-volatile status conditions (poison, paralysis, sleep, burn, and freeze) gained the ability to cure confusion as well. However, while using a Miracleberry cured confusion as intended, if a Pokémon held a Miracleberry and was then inflicted with confusion, the berry wouldn't trigger. This was fixed on October 8th.
  • PP Up could originally be used on Sketch, but since Sketch only has 1 PP it didn't do anything but waste the item. This was fixed in September 8th, when it could no longer be used on Sketch at all.
  • Leftovers' recovery rate was originally 1/8 of the user's max HP; this was halved on September 8th.
  • A Pokémon holding an Everstone could still evolve through an evolution stone until September 10th.

Spreadsheet Discrepancies

All item spreadsheets through August 25th have different effects listed for three items:

  • The Thick Club was supposed to raise Cubone and Marowak's Attack stat by two stages, while the final effect doubles their Attack stat.
  • The Light Ball would raise Pikachu's Special Attack and Special Defense by two stages. The final effect doubles Pikachu's Special Attack stat.
  • The Lucky Egg was supposed to give only 10% bonus experience to the holder instead of 50%.

There's no evidence that the spreadsheet effects were ever coded. In the Spaceworld 1999 demo, the Lucky Egg already gave +50% bonus experience instead of the listed +10%. While the Thick Club and Light Ball weren't implemented in the Spaceworld 1999 build, by September 30th they had their final doubling effects.

Worth noting are the following changes:

  • The Max Elixer had its price lowered slightly. Max Ether had its price raised, then lowered, while the normal Ether had its price lowered, then raised.
  • The Exp. Share was originally a key item, so it couldn't be sold. After it was made possible to get multiple Exp. Shares in a single game, a sell value was added.
  • Moomoo Milk had its price changed three times, with the third time being the last price-related change in the game.
  • All held items save for Charcoal started out with a price of 10₽. The Stick was the first to change, getting a 100₽ price tag on July 17th and a 200₽ price tag on August 4th. The rest changed by Spaceworld 1999, with type-enhancing items and the Light Ball going up to 100₽, the Thick Club going up to 500₽, and most other items gaining a price of 200₽.
  • All Apricorns had an initial price value of 10₽, later increased to 200P by Spaceworld 1999.
  • Valuable items went through the most changes:
  • By July 17th, the Tinymushroom had its price decimated from 5,000₽ to 500₽, while the Slowpoketail had its price lowered from 10,000₽ to 2,000₽. Both Pearls and Stardust/Star Piece had their prices raised at the same time.
  • To make Team Rocket's nefarious plot more understandable, Slowpoketails had their price raised back up to 9,800₽ - the same price as Nuggets.
  • At some point between August 25th and September 30th, one or more developers realized that some of the valuable items were a little too valuable and had their prices reduced, with the Big Pearl taking the biggest hit.
  • The Dragon Scale, Sun Stone, and Up-Grade all had their prices raised to match the evolution stones from Generation I.
  • All of Kurt's Poké Balls originally had a selling price of 0₽, later increased to 10₽ and then to 150₽.
  • The Flower Mail, the first mail to be fully implemented, had its price lowered to 10₽ at one point. It was later raised back up to 50₽ to match the other newly-implemented mail types.
  • Both the Berry and Gold Berry originally had much higher price tags that were later lowered to 10P after the other berries were put in.

Name Changes

  • Moomoo Milk was originally the unbranded and uninteresting Milk.
  • The original incarnation of the Squirtbottle was an item known as the Silph Scope 2, named after the device that revealed the identity of ghosts in Generation I. References to the Silph Scope 2 still remain in the final games, though it specifically mentions that the Pokémon it unmasks resembles a tree. A developer interview states that an event where the player encounters a road-blocking Pokémon was added to the story specifically to accommodate Sudowoodo. So, "Silph Scope 2" was probably just a placeholder name for an item that served the same story purpose as the Silph Scope, i.e. gating the player's progress behind a Pokémon that's impossible to fight without using a key item. The earliest instance of the Squirtbottle appearing in item data is the July 17th file, though it's mentioned by name in a bug report (Bug 246 in Document\ダケモン金銀\バグ報告\金銀バグ0601-0828.xls) for build 0621B, meaning it was renamed at least a month earlier.
  • The first name for the Flying-type enhancing item was White Feather. While the White Feather did appear in Spaceworld 1997, that item actually weakened the foe's Flying-type moves, with the Black Feather being the one that boosted moves. It's possible that it was renamed so players wouldn't confuse it with the Ho-oh- and Lugia-summoning items. The Flee Feather might have been renamed to Smoke Ball for the same reason.
  • The PRZCureBerry had the "paralysis" in its name changed from the katakana マヒ to the hiragana まひ to match how paralysis is written in battle and on the status screen.
  • The Mushroom and Deep Red Mushroom were changed to Tinymushroom and Big Mushroom to better indicate their sell values.
  • Hard Sand was changed to Hard Stone to distinguish it from the Ground-type boosting item Soft Sand.
  • The Red Stone and Red Gem were renamed to Stardust and Star Piece. Since these items are mainly found carried by Staryu, the original names might make players think that they're stealing the poor Pokémon's core.
  • Sacred Fire was quickly renamed to Charcoal when someone realized it shared the name of Ho-oh's signature move.
  • While there's been a Mail item since the 1997 build, Group 2 is the first instance of multiple types of mail in the game's code. At that point they were all named "Mail", but by August 18th they all gained proper names.
  • Surf Mail was named Lapras Mail in the Spaceworld 1999 demo.
  • To better indicate how the items worked, Hard Ball and Aqua Ball were changed to Heavy Ball and Lure Ball respectively.
  • The Sun Stone originally used kanji in its name, 太陽の石. The game's font does not support kanji.
  • The Gold Berry was originally called Apple, its Spaceworld 1997 name. It was later renamed to fit with the new berry types added in Group 2.
