Proto:Half-Life 2 (Windows)/Environment Map Textures

This is a sub-page of Proto:Half-Life 2 (Windows).

Hidden inside the prototype's files are environment map textures (used for reflective surfaces) for several levels that do not appear in the prototype nor the final game. However, the raw level sources for several of these levels exists in the WC Mappack.

These environment maps give a glimpse as to what some of the maps in the WC Mappack look like properly, as many of the levels in the WC Mappack have missing features, such as textures, that make it impossible to see what these levels were intended to look like during their development.

Several of environment maps are for levels that were last edited in 2001, suggesting they are very old leftovers.

Airex_01

Airex_01 shows the a part of the exterior of the Air Exchange, an area cut from the final game. None of the parts in the environmental map match the AirEx maps in WC Mappack.

Airex_02

Airex_02 is a gray and white version of Airex_01.

Airex_03

These do not match any part of the AirEx, but do seem somewhat like the wide corridors in some of the AirEx maps.

Airex_04

An environmental map taken in an area similar to the previous one.

Borealis_003

This environmental map has textures that do not appear in the prototype nor the final version of the game.

Borealis_sea

This environmental map shows a skybox not seen in the final game nor the prototype.

A copy of this env map can be found under the name "env_borealis002".

Borealisengineroom001

The Borealis engine control room in this appears to be from "borealis_07_untouched", a Borealis map last edited on August 16th, 2001. A majority of the Borealis' maps were last edited summer 2002, a year later than the map this environmental map was made.

Borealisfreezer001

Some of the pictures in this map set have ice around the boxes, suggesting this environmental map was made with some of the newest Borealis maps, as older maps lack the ice around some of the boxes.

Borealishallway001

This map shown looks like it did not come from the Borealis, as none of the textures used in it are seen in the Borealis maps.

C17_01_17

This env map is for c17_01, a scrapped industrial area the player was meant to visit at the start of the game, before getting the HEV suit. The "17" in it shows what revision it was meant for.

C17_04_23

This is an env map for "c17_04", an early take on City 17 that was meant to be. This map was made when City 17 was based on American (instead of Eastern European) cities.

The "23" indicates the revision this env map was taken from.

Canals001

This environmental map texture matches "canals02_001", found in the WC Mappack in the "john/canals" folder.

Caves001

Environmental map for a cave area. It could be for either the Antlion caves (which eventually appeared in Episode Two), a test map with Alyx in a cave called "alyx_caves03" or "alyx_cave4, or Eli's original location, which is called "proto_eliden".

Caves002

Lighter version of Caves001.

Citadel 001

This env map appears to be from the map "proto_citadel_skybox", but taken from inside the Citadel on the map.

Citadel 002

Env map for an unknown Citadel level.

Citadel_Consul

This is an env map for proto_citadel_consul, a prototype version of Breen's chambers. Concept art for this room can be found in Raising the Bar.

Citadel_Interior

There are several levels in the WC Mappack with the name "Citadel_interior", but none of them match the level shown in this env map.

This appears to be a skybox for the Citadel.

env_borealis

The images in this env map appear to be for the Borealis' engine room.

This environment map and nether_01a show an early underground map for City 17.

This is an env map for the level "proto_citaldel_tankroom". It shows some details, such as additional pipes that look similar to the ones in the final game's Citadel, that are missing from the level found in the WC Mappack.

A variant of the previous env map with darker lighting.

sky_wasteland02

Unknown, but it appears to be for the scrapped Wasteland area. The coast area does indicate it might be for the Coast area as well.

An env map taken from the "vert_03" level, a level for a removed skyscraper area known as "Vertigo". What's interesting is that these show what the area would look like with proper lighting, skybox, and the Xses from textures removed.

A copy of this env map exists and is named "greenglass01".
