Prototype 611 of Sonic Blast is dated May 31, 1996, just over three months before the final build.

General Differences

  • Most of the game is missing, including Knuckles and all stages beyond Green Hill Zone, resulting in the ROM being half the size of later builds. While the code to handle other stages and Knuckles is implemented, none of the data is present in the ROM yet, so attempting to force load any of them using cheats (00D125 for stages, 00D133 for characters) causes the game to crash.
  • After the Sega screen, the game starts off immediately in Green Hill Act 1 with no title screen or character select.
  • There are no level intro or end title cards.

  • Sonic's sprites lack shading behind his quills.
  • Rings are not lost when hit, although they still fly out.

Green Hill Zone

  • Sonic spawns two pixels forward.
  • Some of the grass tiles on the ground are slightly different.
  • It is possible to double-jump over the left side of Green Hill Act 2 and fall into a realm of garbage data beneath the level.
  • After defeating the first boss. Sonic remains taunting in a continuous loop, resulting in a softlock.
