Proto:Undertale Yellow
This page details one or more prototype versions of Undertale Yellow.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article? |

The Demo of Undertale Yellow was released on November 30th, 2016. It only covers the Dark Ruins, but as the release dates of this and the final version are 8 years apart, there are still plenty of differences to unpack here.
General Differences
- The Demo uses an engine created by then-head programmer Spasco. The combat portion was previously released as a part of Annoying Dog fight, another fangame "made by Spasco in 3 weeks in 2015 for fun".
- The final game was partially recoded with mysteryracer's engine from Undertale Customs; some code such as UI objects and cutscenes from the Demo remained mostly intact.
- The Demo's GameMaker version was, according to the general info chunk, Studio 1.4.1760, while the final version bumps it to at least 2023.4.
Cutscene Differences
Intro Slides
Most slides were redrawn, and the wording got slightly refined.

Here, the Demo has a primitive animation where both sides move a bit behind slowly; in the final version, the 3 sub-slides shown above are revealed gradually.

Audio Differences
All music has a sample rate of 44100Hz in the Demo; it's (mostly) reduced to 32000Hz in the final version.
To do: Others |
Early | Final |
---|---|
The instrumentation of "Once Upon a Truthful Time" is closer to Undertale 's "Once Upon A Time" in the final version.
Early | Final |
---|---|
"Fallen Down (Yellow)" has slightly different instrumentation and is shorter.
Early | Final |
---|---|
"Ruins (Yellow)" has different instrumentation as well.
Early | Final |
---|---|
"Enemy Retreating" has much less refined mixing, different drumming, extra wind and cymbal sounds, and missing pitch bends.
The way it speeds down is different, and it also plays on the But Nobody Came screen.
Kill Count | Demo | Final |
---|---|---|
13 | 1x | 1x (7/7) |
14 | 0.9x | ~0.86x (6/7) |
15 | 0.8x | ~0.71x (5/7) |
16 | 0.7x | ~0.57x (4/7) |
17 | 0.6x | ~0.43x (3/7) |
18 | 0.5x | ~0.29x (2/7) |
19 | 0.4x | ~0.14x (1/7) |
20 (But Nobody Came) | 0.2x | nobodycame_yellow plays instead |
The Demo has a unique medley for its credits screen, known as "To Be Continued." For some reason, it was apparently rendered with Adobe Premiere Pro.
