Tengai Makyou: Ziria (TurboGrafx-CD)/Old Cutscenes
This is a sub-page of Tengai Makyou: Ziria (TurboGrafx-CD).
If left idle at the title screen, the game will play through several "demo reels" of cutscene snippets. The first set of these is particulary interesting: none of the scenes shown in it ever actually happen! This is because it's made up of bits of scrapped cutscenes from the game's earlier ARPG incarnation.
However, it turns out that there's far more to these than what what's shown in this sequence. First of all, though the demo shows them with a sepia tint, they're actually stored in full color; after loading the original data, the game converts the colors to the sepia palette on the fly.
Furthermore, there are quite a few more of these scenes on the disc than what's shown in the demo! Most likely, the programmer just copied a bunch of sequences from the old version and only picked some of them for use, leaving the rest unused.
Aside from the small number of voice clips that already play in the demo sequence, the audio that goes with these seems to be gone.
To view these in-game in place of the first scene of the normal demo sequence, edit the data that appears at 0x247F6 in the ISO (usually found at $AFF6 in memory on the title screen) as follows: Replace the first 2 bytes with the scene's sector number from the table below in big-endian format. Then, replace the next 8 bytes with the sequence FE FF FF FF FF FF FF 00, which disables ADPCM playback, makes the scene's animation play out in full before stopping, and disables the sepia tint effect.
To do: There are more scenes than this (e.g. 0xEBFC and 0xEBE9, which are also part of the demos), but checking all of them would pretty much require rifling through the entire disc. Also, it would be nice to have proper GIFs of these animations, but frankly it's just too much work on top of trying to document everything else here. |
