Inaccessible Room in Backwards

Hmmm...
To do:
Get a screenshot of the room itself.

There is an inaccessible room in this chapter's map, and while it is ostensibly connected to the accessible rooms via the inaccessible rooms beyond the second one, using noclip to enter this area and attempting to access the secret room from that direction will result in the wall with the above message on it appearing with the player partially inside it, suggesting that if the player was to enter the secret room, it would be from another direction, despite the fact that there are no other ways into the room.

This room also contains Backwards's narrator object (see below).

Oddly, if the player noclips to the secret room and then back to the main area, some of the floors will be missing, and the first room will be sealed off. The player can fall into the holes, leaving them stuck on the invisible floors at the bottom of the rooms.

NPC Head Room in Mobius

This map has a hidden out-of-bounds box containing floating NPC heads (with the textures of the NPC heads in Mobius). Enabling fullbright shows that the walls, floor, and ceiling of the box use a 'dev' orange grid texture.

Narrator Objects

Every map, excluding the three menu maps and note.bsp (not to be confused with notes.bsp), contains a single instance of a book (which is originally from the chapter Down). These books are the 'narrator' objects, and control the narration for each map; removing one will stop Davey's voice-over until the map is reloaded or another map is loaded. The one in Maze is unused, due to that chapter no longer having narration. The narrator object in Lecture is the only one that can be viewed in-game without using console commands; most of them are in out-of-bounds boxes.

Enabling fullbright with the Source console will often allow the surroundings of the book (and, sometimes, the book itself) to be seen, and often, for books which are in out-of-bounds boxes, at least one, if not all of the walls of the box will have a placeholder development texture.

The narrator books that are located out-of-bounds in larger maps are generally fairly close to the starting point of the chapter. The only exception to this is the one in House.

Intro

Outside of the bounds of one part of the map are a black box and a glowing white box. Within the black box is the narrator.

Whisper

Shooting the narrator object reveals that it bleeds, since it's a generic_actor entity.

Backwards

This book is located in the inaccessible room detailed above.

Entering and Exiting

As these maps are just slightly-edited versions of each other, they have the same narrator, in the same place. The book is normally too dark to see in this map.

Stairs

This book is located inside the ceiling brush of the room filled with ideas.

Puzzle

Like the ones in Entering and Exiting, the book is normally too dark to see. Unusually, the box that this one is located in is completely black.

Down

Aside from the original four books pictured at the beginning of this section, this map also has a separate narrator object. Interestingly, one of the box's walls is completely lacking a texture.

Notes

Though this book is almost too dark to see, the edges of it can just about be made out without enabling fullbright.

Escape

The book in this map is located beneath the island of the first prison.

House

As mentioned above, the box containing this book is located on the other side of the map from the starting point, unlike the other books.

Lecture

Lecture's narrator object was placed below the seats on one side of the lecture hall.

This book is the only one of the narrator objects which can be seen in-game without using console commands, both in the starting position (sometimes?) and by jumping as the lecturer.

Theater

The book in Theater is located in one of the galleries. Even if it was bright enough to easily be seen, it is still too high above the level of the stage to be seen normally.

Mobius

The box containing Mobius's narrator is fairly close to the above-mentioned hidden box with floating NPC heads. Also, the map's ambient lighting is just about enough to see the book with without resorting to fullbright.

Island

The book is located in a box at one end of the map.

Machine

The book is located in another out-of-bounds box.

Tower

Epilogue

Epilogue is split into two maps (nomansland1 and nomansland2), and unsurprisingly each one of them has a narrator object.

Maze

The final narrator is found below the floor of the maze. As mentioned above, this one is no longer used, since Maze's narration was removed at a point in development before the game was released.
