The Rise of Captain Longbeard/Unused Sounds

From The Cutting Room Floor

This is a sub-page of The Rise of Captain Longbeard.

There's a gigantic number of unused sound files present in the game. The majority are for cutscenes, which indicates the cutscenes have undergone several revisions. These files include full voice acting for the parrot, who is referred to as Petey in the sound files themselves. Furthermore, a large portion of the cutscene sound files are even earlier placeholder text-to-speech voices, and the female pirate has a voice clip, indicating she originally spoke.

Additionally, these unused files include interesting information about a prior storyline. Captain Firebeard was originally called Captain Blackbeard, and instead of searching for the Medallion he was looking for an object called the Heart of Ehecatl.

Below are all the sounds, ranging from test sounds to the early opening cutscene sound files. The final audio for the opening cutscene differs in that all of it is baked into two long audio files called CUTSCENE1 and CUTSCENE2.

File Name Sound File Dialogue Description
captain_outofmeway
"Get outta me way swabby!" An early text-to-speech version of what the Captain says in the opening.
captain_wherewebe
"Where we be?" Early text-to-speech version of the Captain asking the Quartermaster where they are in the voyage.
captain_whatquarters
"What ye be doin' in me quarters?" An early text-to-speech version of the Captain confronting Longfellow after Longfellow comes out of his quarters.
captain_3towind
"Ha ha ha. This squiffy is three to the wind." Text-to-speech audio for the Captain talking down on someone, likely Longfellow. It may have been used when the Captain confronts Longfellow for sneaking into his quarters.
captain_swimfish
"Looks like you be swimmin' with the fishes tonight." An early text-to-speech version of the Captain threatening Longfellow in the opening.
captain_arrr
"Ahhh!" An early text-to-speech version of an exclamation for the Captain. It sounds much less impressive than what its filename conveys.
captain_scurvyswab
"Scurvy swab." Text-to-speech audio of the Captain saying an insult. It could have fit in almost anywhere in the opening cutscene.
longbeard_wheremap
"I can't let him get the ultimate something and kill the crew. Where does he keep the map?" An early text-to-speech version of what Longfellow says in the intro when entering the Captain's quarters. This file indicates that Longfellow was originally going to steal a map instead of a piece of the medallion. It also indicates that the game's story was not finalized yet, hence Longfellow saying "the ultimate something."
longbeard_killyouall
"Ah, well. Hey everyone, pirate Blackbeard means to kill you all." An early text-to-speech version of what Longfellow says to the crew after getting out of the Captain's quarters. Longfellow refers to the Captain as Blackbeard, which may have been an early name for the Captain.
longbeard_whatname
"Usually, pirates don't survive being tossed overboard. What's your name, my new feathered friend?" Text-to-speech audio of Longfellow asking for the Parrot's name.
longbeard_answeradventure
"I'm Robert Longfellow my good...parrot. But my friends call me Rob, and I set sail to answer the call of adventure and see sights few can even imagine. Originally, anyway." Text-to-speech audio of Longfellow introducing himself to the Parrot.
longbeard_peteyparrot
"I'm gonna call you Petey the Parrot." A text-to-speech version of some dialogue from an early version of the cutscene when Longfellow meets the Parrot. It looks like Longfellow was going to give the Parrot the name "Petey." In the final, the Parrot doesn't have a name.
longbeard_knowheart
"What did you say? The Heart? You know, of it?" Longfellow asking the Parrot about the Heart of Ehecatl.
longbeard_befirst
"I'll be the first." Text-to-speech audio for Longfellow saying he'll be the first to do something. It'd fit most at the end of the beach cutscene with the Parrot.
parrot_test
"Polly wants a cracker." A muddy sounding text-to-speech file of the Parrot speaking English. In the final, the only audio file the Parrot uses is a generic squawk (petey_dialogue_squawk), and it never says anything like this even in its text.
parrot_comeashore
"Usually, pirates come ashore on a dingy." Early text-to-speech audio for what the Parrot's first says to Longfellow.
parrot_introduction
"A drowned rat counts his blessings...I suppose. I'm Reginald Arthur Peabody...the parrot of the late, great, captain." Audio of the Parrot introducing itself, referring to itself as Reginald Arthur Peabody. The file unfortunately ends right before it says which captain it belonged to. Since Captain Firebeard is the only captain in the final game, it's possible the Parrot belonged to him.
parrot_doyou
"Do you?" Text-to-speech audio of the Parrot asking a question to someone, likely Longfellow.
parrot_sightseeing
"Well Robert, you can't just be sightseeing. Being a pirate, you are a treasure seeker dot dot dot at heart." Text-to-speech audio of the Parrot responding to something Longfellow said. It hilariously pronounces the ellipsis in the sentence.
parrot_peteyparrot
"Petey, the Parrot dot dot dot, what brings you to my islands...bilge rat?" Text-to-speech audio for the Parrot responding to Longfellow giving him the name "Petey." Like the previous clip, this one also pronounces the ellipsis.
parrot_heartehecatl
"Many have come to the islands looking for the Heart of Ehecatl. None have unlocked its secrets. I doubt you'd do any better." The Parrot talks about the Heart of Ehecatl, which is an object mentioned only in these early audio clips.
parrot_trypirate
"It'll be a laugh to see you try, pirate." Text-to-speech audio of the Parrot mocking Longfellow's ability. This might have been the Parrot's response to what Longfellow says in longbeard_befirst.
random_looklively
"Look lively." Text-to-speech audio of the Quartermaster's dialogue at the start of the cutscene.
random_huh
"Huh?" Text-to-speech audio of someone confused. Since the other internal filename starting with random was for the Quartermaster, this one could've been for him as well. This could have fit almost anywhere.
PIRATEMALE_1_WHATYEBE
"What ye be on about, Longfellow?" Early audio of a male pirate in the opening cutscene after Longfellow confronts the crew about the Captain's plans.
FEMALEPIRATE_1_WALKTHEPLANK
"Make him walk the plank!" An audio clip for the female pirate! In the final, she's completely silent.
CPT_1_OUTTAMEWAY
"Get outta me way, ya scum!" A slightly different version of what the Captain first says in the opening when seeing Longfellow in his way. This features an early voice actor for the Captain.
CPT_2_WHEREWEBE
"Where we be, Mr. Bennett?" A near-final version of the Captain asking the Quartermaster where they are in their voyage.
CPT_3_GOODGOOD
"Good, good. Soon the Heart of Ehecatl will be mine, and I'll be sendin' this worthless crew to the briny deep!" Early audio of what the Captain says in the opening when talking to the pirate about the voyage. The Captain mentions an object called the Heart of Ehecatl, which may have been the original object of power that was replaced by the Medallion in the final.
CPT_4_YARRRRR
"YARRRRR!" An exclamation the Captain would make somewhere in the opening cutscene. This has the early voice actor as well.
CPT_5_WHOSINMEQUARTERS
"Who's in me quarters?! I'll gut ya alive, when I get me hands on ya!" The Captain asking who's in his quarters when Longfellow is in there.
CPT_6_YOUHAVENERVE
"You have a lot of nerve, locking the captain out of his quarters. What are you up to, Longfellow?" Audio of the Captain confronting Longfellow after coming out of his quarters. This is a separate file that is later than the text-to-speech version, but still different from the final.
CPT_7_DONTBELISTENING
"Don't be listenin' to this swab, lads! He be loaded to the gun walls!" An early version of what the Captain says to the crew after Longfellow reveals the Captain's plans.
CPT_8_MUTINOUSWORDS
"Hahaha! However...those be mutinous words if I ever did hear them. What should we do with the boy?" An earlier version of the Captain asking the crew what to do with Longfellow for betraying him.
CPT_9_YOUHEARDHER
"You heard her sharkbait! Looks like a short walk and a sudden drop for you!" Early audio of what the Captain says after the crew decides to make Longfellow walk the plank. The female the Captain refers to may be the female pirate on board the ship, indicated by the earlier voice clip from her.
FST_1_LOOKLIVELY
"Look lively, ya swabs! Captain on deck!" A different version of what the Quartermaster says as the Captain comes out of his cabin in the very beginning of the game.
FST_2_GETTINCLOSE
"We be gettin' real close to the island, captain." Early version of the Quartermaster's reply to the Captain's question about progress.
FST_3_AYECAPN
"Aye, Cap'n. Not even the king's navy will stand a chance against ya. You'll rule the seven seas." A different version of the Quartermaster's reply to the Captain talking about gaining power.
PETEY_1_ONADINGY
"Usually pirates come ashore on a dingy. SQUAAAWWWK!" WARNING: VERY HIGH-PITCHED SQUAWK AT THE END! Early audio for the Parrot implying that Longfellow's method of getting to the island was unusual.
PETEY_2_DROWNEDRAT
"A drowned rat counts his blessings...I suppose. I'm Reginald Arthur Peabody, the parrot of the late, great, captain-" A later version of parrot_introduction. This version makes it much more clear why the file ends abruptly: Longfellow interrupted the Parrot, as indicated by the ROB_4_CALLYOUPETEY sound file.
PETEY_3_PETEYTHEPARROT
"Petey...the parrot?" An early audio file for the beach cutscene when Longfellow meets the Parrot, who was originally named Petey according to this clip. In the final, the Parrot doesn't speak English and doesn't have a name.
PETEY_4_WHATBRINGS
"What brings you to my islands?" The Parrot asks Longfellow why he's here. Interestingly, it mentions the Parrot owning the islands as well as mentioning multiple islands instead of a single one. In the final, the other three islands are far away and unrelated to the first island.
PETEY_5_TREASURESEEKERATHEART
"Ohh, Robert. You can't just be...sightseeing. Being a pirate, you're a treasure seeker." Early audio of the Parrot not buying some excuse Longfellow must have made up about being on the island. It's slightly different from the earlier text-to-speech version.
PETEY_6_DOYOU
"Do you?" Like the text-to-speech version, except with the Parrot's early voice actor.
PETEY_7_MANYHAVECOME
"Many have come to these islands looking for the Heart of Ehecatl. None have unlocked its secrets. I doubt you'd do any better." Very similar to the text-to-speech version, except with the Parrot's early voice actor.
PETEY_8_LAUGHTOSEEYOUTRY
"It'll be a laugh to see you try, pirate! SQUAAAWWWK!" WARNING: VERY HIGH-PITCHED SQUAWK AT THE END! A later version of parrot_trypirate with the Parrot's early voice actor.
ROB_1_CANTLET
"Aww, I can't let the Captain get the Heart of the...whatever, and send the crew to Davy Jones' locker." Early audio for Longfellow mentioning his plan to overthrow the Captain. Based on how Longfellow is whispering, this was likely intended to be said upon entering the Captain's Quarters.
ROB_2_HEYEVERYONE
"Hey everyone! The captain means to do away with the lot of you! Send you all to an early grave!" Early audio of Longfellow warning everyone about the Captain's intentions.
ROB_3_USUALLYPIRATE
"Usually, pirates don't survive bein' tossed overboard. What's your name, my new feathered friend?" A later version of longbeard_whatname with Longfellow's early voice actor.
ROB_4_CALLYOUPETEY
"Uhhh- I'm gonna just call you Petey the Parrot." Early audio of Longfellow giving a name to the Parrot.
ROB_5_ROBERTLONGFELLOW
"I am Robert Longfellow, my good parrot. My friends call me Rob. I've come to answer the call of adventure, and see sights few can even imagine...originally, anyway." Early audio of Longfellow introducing himself to the Parrot. It's slightly different from the text-to-speech version.
ROB_6_WHATDIDYOUSAY
"What did you say? The Heart? You know of it?" A later version of longbeard_knowheart.
ROB_7_ILLBEFIRST
"I'll be the first!" Early audio of Longfellow saying he'll be the first to find something, presumably the medallion. This features an early voice actor for Longfellow.
