Ello, am CitizenFive, also known as TheFifthCitizen. 70% of my body is made of Source Engine knowledge.

My only real achievement on this site is being the sole curator of the page for Black Mesa, if only because I know the game like the back of my hand from playing it so much. I turned it from a stub that documented hidden stuff on the game's textures into the behemoth of an unused content archive it is now. Once I get tired of editing pages over on TVTropes, I'll be sure to finish it, and then maybe move on to documenting other games.

Things to document

Black Mesa

Unused Map Elements

  • Various disabled visgroups for older map features (i.e: crusher section at the end of bm_c2a3c before it was moved to bm_c2a4a, mod release credits sequence in bm_c3a2i)
  • uc_demo: A small excerpt of bm_c1a1c
  • bm_c1a2a - Original side vent visgroup: A rendition of the ventilation chamber to the left of the first vent entrance more in line with Half-Life's, including the fan that obstructs the supplies until the power is shut off
  • bm_c1a2c - "CM" developer initials: Probably from Carlos Montero
  • bm_c2a2b - "Murder Mystery 9000": Disabled visgroup containing blood splatter decals and a scientist corpse
  • Early/Old Questionable Ethics Xen rooms: qe_xen_room is an early version of the retail remake of the Xen room, which contains some planters for small Xen flora not seen in the final, and bm_c2a4f_xenartroom contains the rendition of the room from the mod release
  • Surface Tension Uncut mod version: The original STU maps created by Chon Kemp before he joined Crowbar Collective
  • bm_c2a5i - "End Guys" visgroup: A setup for a squad of HECU soldiers (including one with an RPG) and an Abrams to battle the Garg at the end of Surface Tension and somehow kill it
  • TONS of early blockouts for parts of the Xen levels, including the Survey Team camp, teleportation hub, Vort village, top of the Nihilanth Tower - to name a few
  • End Game sections: Among the unused instances for this chapter are an older version of the initial Tower explosion scene, an unseen conference room, and the Boid area copied straight from Half-Life

Half-Life 2

Unused/Missing Dialogue

Citizens have unused dialogue for questioning/answering Vortigaunts and reacting to friendly fire from the player. There are also a bunch of entries in the closed captions for Citizen lines which don't exist in audio form (except for a few in the 2003 leak) - these include calling out Antlions/Barnacles/Hopper mines by name, "commander mode" lines, and random non-sequitur remarks. There are, in fact, TONS of lines for various characters throughout the game that now only exist as captions or soundscript entries.

In addition there are a few instances of dialogue for specific Citizens that comes in male and female variation despite the associated Citizens having a preset gender (example: the commanding Citizen stationed at the Canal outpost where the Airboat gets fitted with the chopper cannon).

Unused Map Elements

Several interesting unfinished elements can be found either in the map sources or the compiled maps themselves including:

  • A setup in d1_trainstation_01 for the player to be killed by turrets should they try to leave the station platform
  • A "hallucination" event in d1_trainstation_06
  • A flashback sequence in d2_coast_09

  • Three unused loading screens, two featuring earlier designs for the protagonists and the Nest (LoadingBackground_Maintenance_1920 and LoadingBackground_Nest_Roof), and LoadingBackground_Flying_1920
  • An unused loading artwork featuring Yu punching Kay (this seems to have been removed in the latest update, but I have the texture saved)

  • Three inaccessible outfit sets for the protagonists: "Source Pioneer", "Muffin/Cupcake", and "Timeskip"
