User:GyroMan/Revenge of Shinobi II proto
The "Revenge of Shinobi II" prototype is a weird case. The header is actually unedited from the older November 1992 prototype, so the exact date of this build is unknown; but it's safe to assume it is from somewhere in early 1993. It's far closer to the final than the previous prototype, now with the finalized levels, enemies, art, but still is quite different from the final product and a fair bit glitchier. The prototype gets its name from its title screen, which reads "The Revenge of Shinobi II"; this could mean that the early international title for the game was to act as a sequel to The Revenge of Shinobi.

The title screen of the prototype, and the origin of the proto's name. It appears that the original international title for the game was going to be "The Revenge of Shinobi II", but it was eventually changed to "Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master".
Intro Text
The intro text changed drastically between the prototype and the final; instead of reading an excerpt from the 'Secret Manual of Oboro Ninjitsu', it gives a recap of Revenge of Shinobi's story in some hilariously awful engrish.

'SHADOWS'
HE IS STRONGER THAN STEEL AND MOVES FASTER THAN A WHIRLWIND. SOMETIMES HE HIDES IN MUD. OTHER TIMES HE CHANGES HIS SHAPE LIKE AN EVER CHANGING CLOUD. ALTHOUGH HIS FIGHTING SPIRIT BURNS LIKE FIRE, HIS MIND IS AS CALM AS STILL WATER. 'VIOLATION OF THE COMMANDMENTS' SHOULD SHINOBI FAIL BEFORE COMPLETING THE MISSION, HE WILL DISAPPEAR BEFORE THE DAWN AND VANISH FOREVER. KEEP THIS KNOWLEDGE IN YOUR HEART AND MIND. --FROM THE 'SECRET MANUAL OF OBORO NINJITSU' |

The title, of course, is different, and the word "GAME" is no longer streched out to meet "OPTIONS" in width.

-Logo is different, obviously...
-There are numbers before the sounds in the sound test in the prototype.
-By default, you start with 40 shurikens in the prototype and 50 in the final.
-The names of the S.E. sounds are different. Interestingly, S.E. 60 skips straight to S.E. 65.

-The palette for Musashi and the cliff he stands on are different; the rocks are more red in the prototype. Musashi has a lot more shading on him.
-The level 1 portrait doesn't actually match anything in the level, and is used for the level 6 portrait in the final. The level 6 portrait itself is edited in the final game to be a full moon instead of a crescent among some other details.
-The sunrays coming from the clouds are brighter in the prototype.
-There's a harbor and 2 boats in the river in the prototype that isn't there in the final.
-The font for the level names got reworked to be a more "handwritten", including the kanji.
Debug Menu
A few debug features are available by using button combinations. While these do exist in the final game, they must be reenabled with a PAR code.
Character Editor
By pressing B+C then A, you can access a debug menu anytime, anywhere, leftover from the 1192 prototype. Sadly, the byte editor and map editor found in the 1192 debug menu no longer work, but the tile editor is still intact.
DIRECTION: Move the cursor on the tile grid.
A + UP/DOWN: Switch which palette you're viewing/using.
A + LEFT/RIGHT: Switch which color in the palette you're using.
B + UP/DOWN: Go up or down in the tile selector.
B + LEFT/RIGHT: Go left or right in the tile selector.
Note that the tile in the top left corner is the one you are editing.
C: Draw a pixel on whatever part the cursor's on.
B + START: Quit the tile editor.
START: In the 1192 proto, this switched to the byte editor. However, now it just crashes the game. On certain screens (like the intro) you can get a crash message:
"4: ILLEGAL INS 00000070"
Level Select
By pressing A while in the ninjitsu menu, the number of the level you're in will appear on the top left. By pressing A + Up/Down you can switch between the 7 levels. Pressing A + Start will have the game fade out and will load the level selected.
