Hi, its Hiccup/mariomadproductions who asked you about the NSMB E3 version quite a while ago. I have some more questions. Could you answer some?

shoot away

I'll see what I can do

okay thanks 1. were the multiplayer stages versions of the singleplayer stages, or were they "new"? 2. did any of the music have "wah" sounds 3. was the "boss win" jingle the same as final?

See that unused multiplayer desert stage? It was also single player.

Basically you could play the levels solo or multi and it worked the same.

As for the music, there was a lot of loud music and other game sounds, I don't remember any "wah" sounds though"

4. was multiplayer in seperate kiosks/DSs or was there a menu button for it? 5. did the levels have names like "1-1" 6. can you control pipe cannons direction or did they move themselves? tell me if I'm asking too many questions or anything

separate kiosks for single and multiplayer

A generic press start/a (don't remember) on the bottom. Levels were named like "Level 1" and so on...

As for the pipes, I think they were moving by themselves

would that be:

  • "Course 1" and so on
  • "Level 1" and so on

or

  • "Stage 1" and so on?

Course

was there a lives counter?

yup

7. where did the lives counter appear? 8. what was the title screen music, if there was any?

bottom screen, exactly like it is in the trailer actually. (though you had 4 or 5 lives... not 99) title screen was silent

9. what happened (if anything) if you kicked goombas, koopas etc? 10. was the lives counter only in multiplayer? in this video there is no lives counter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPvVdbBvDqI

Iives in multi if think (gee, I'll have to think this through) I didn't try kicking goombas but I'd guess the behaviour would have been similair to Mario 64 DS. As for kicking koopas, I can tell you that when they were in a shell form, it was the same as throwing one

11. were there loading or setup screens for the multiplayer demo, like final Mario vs. Luigi, or was it automatic?

You had a wait screen, and the two ds systems would sync once both players were on the wait screen, the game would let one player choose the level

did it differ to the final screen? what did it look like?

well it was very similar, small pictures of the stage themselves

the background was white I think

the brick pattern was definitly not there

12. Where could you find the lightning powerup? Did it make you into Small Mario or Mini Mario? 13. Could you do a backflip like in Mario 64? (Crouch+Jump)? Or was crouching+jump the same as final?

so that one... I didn't get the lightning power up. No backfli

or long jump

14. Were there Spindrifts? 15. Were there mushrooms platforms that bent with your weight?

Spindrift present in a giant mario section. they would bend yeah

16. Did music stop with Mega Mario, or not change?

there was no change at all, and if I don't remember it wrong, there was no growing sound effect either

17. Was the enemy stomping sound from SM64DS or the same as the final NSMB?

mario 64

18. Did 1-Ups appear in singleplayer? btw you can see my WIP page here http://hiccup.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Prerelease:New_Super_Mario_Bros.#E3_2005_Kiosk_Demo

Welp, I'd say no

19. Could you destroy the yellow blocks?

As big mario

how?

Giant I mean (here's me translating my french badly again) You'd either walk through them like you'd do on the final build or you'd punch them

btw if you remember anything feel free to add something to this page: http://hiccup.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Talk:Prerelease:New_Super_Mario_Bros. (the discussion page)

alright

how did you get into here then? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9r99rNi-6s&feature=youtu.be&t=1m49s

Back in the day my uncle worked at a gaming magasine in France

and he asked his boss if he could take me there

'twas a luck kinda thing

(I don't remember these Mario 64-like ! Boxes though)

I meant how you get into the bonus room. But that interesting. I guess he didn't get to keep any demos?

P

You know, had the security not being that tight...

(as for the bonus room: canon pipe)

what bonus room are you talking about? I'm talking about the one under the yellow blocks beside the Whomps and the pole in the castle.

Oh that one

Didn't get to it I think

Are you certain they were more than three levels? All reports and videos I've seen have only shown three levels. The grassland had an underground room, but there was no underground level as far as I could see. Btw, tell me if I need to reword something.

I'll get a look into it once I'm through with a thing

20. Could you ride lakitu's cloud? 21. Did you take any pictures/audio/video at the time? 22. What happened if you stomped a big dry bones? 23. Was there a game over screen? 24. Did Mario say anything at any point other than using a pipe cannon? 25. How did the Yellow ! Blocks work? Were the small Yellow ! Blocks different from the big ones? 26. Could you break brick blocks as small Mario? 27. Did Blue ! Blocks always contains coins? 28. Was wall-jumping harder than the final game?

20. Dunno

21. Have to check if I still have the old computer we used at the time. 22. You'd bounce on them like in the final. 23. There was a "Thanks for Playing" screen 24. I don't think so. 25. That yellow ! block baffles me, I didn't remember that so I can't really tell ya. 26. Nope. 27. See 25

28. It worked essentially the same I think

29. When did the "Thanks for Playing" screen appear? 30. Could you see the cart in the DS? What did it look like? 31. Where did "quit" on the pause menu bring you? 32. Did the pause menu look the same as final? 33. Did the "reset" combo (L+R+Start+Select) work?

29. End of a level.

30. Didn't, it was in a kiosk and the DS itself was attached to it. 31&32. Didn't pause the game at any point

33. I didn't know about the reset combo at the time so I cannot tell you

34. If you run out of lives, did that take you to the game over screen?

to a "thanks for playing" screen

35. what happened if you defeated the mega goomba in the field level with ground pounds? 36. what happened if mega mario stomped or kicked the mega goomba in the field level? 37. which course had which number? i.e. which one was Course 1, which one was Course 2 etc?

35 & 36:

A ground pound would squish him like usual, no other things would happen.

Course 1 was overworld and 2 was Desert I think

38. Could you backtrack through any doors/pipes? 39. Could you get 1-up combos with the Super Star?

38. Nope. 39. There was no combo bar at the top and no 1-up

I meant with invincible Mario (from the starman), not Mega Mario :P

OH, Then yeah, the classic combo system worked
