Developer Functions

Hmmm...
To do:
Images. Apparently it's possible to debug a Music Star but nobody has figured it out yet.[1]

ROM Test

To access ROM testing features, the player must hold down the A, B and C buttons and press the reset button.

Performing a ROM Test counts as a hard reset - all save data will be lost.

Revisional and Regional Differences

Several revisions of the Music Star were released.

Version 6.0 00 32.0 0 US (USA)

American release using the Month / Day date format. This was the version used in the original release of the Music Star.

Version 6.0 00 32.0 0 EU (Europe)

European release using the Day / Month date format. This was the version used in the original release of the Music Star.

This ROM version was also used by some early US Music Star models, due to them being incorrectly installed with the European hardware.

Version 6.0 01 32.0 0 US (USA)

The ROM version used with wave 2 American models. The money gained from inheritance and the price of the Wild Guitar instrument were changed in this release. This version uses the Month / Day date format.

Version 6.0 01 32.0 0 EU (Europe)

Unknown.

Password Exclusive Items and Characters

Several items were only made available to the player by using the item password feature on the PC login screen. A few of these items were previously accessible on the Music Star's website, Music City, but since the website's shutdown in 2013 there has been no consistent way to obtain these items due to a lack of password generators. It is technically possible to obtain these items using trial and error, but due to the vast number of potential passwords it is not very likely the player will ever come across any of these items.

Dream Mic

One of the three special instruments, alongside Wild Guitar and Mega Drums, it was originally only obtainable on Music City by trading for a high-level CD.

Boy's and Girl's Destiny Star

Also obtained on Music City, these single-use items would transform your character into the secret characters Dreamtchi or Dazzilitchi, respectively. There are no other ways to access these characters.

Tickets

Four ticket items - N.Y. Ticket, London Ticket, Tokyo Ticket and Sydney Ticket - are accessible through the password system despite never being made obtainable on Music City. Despite being based upon the ticket items featured on the V3 and V4, the tickets serve a completely different purpose on the Music Star - they have the same effects as the concert performances your Tamagotchi attends at specific times throughout the day. All four tickets function identically and are single-use items.

"Error" Oddity

While getting an item password incorrect usually makes the "no" sound, occasionally the player will be greeted with a jack-in-the-box and the word "Error", presented in the same way that items are. While not strictly an item in and of itself, it's unlikely the player will encounter these errors under normal circumstances as the error passwords are so sparsely distributed throughout the set of all possible item passwords. These errors may correspond to passwords that would be generated using an item with an ID value outside the range of valid item ID values, as suggested by item generators which functioned while Music City was still accessible.
