Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was first announced during in June 2013 at E3 2013 in Los Angeles, CA and was playable at the show as well as at select Best Buy stores across the United States (and Canada?). The game was later shown in various states at PAX 2013 and Nintendo Directs up until its release in February 2014.

(During the loading screen, Diddy runs behind Donkey Kong like he did in Returns. In the final version, Diddy and Donkey Kong perform a rolling attack continuously across the screen or run behind Donkey Kong << ---- Need to check this. He only seems to follow in Returns 3D.

  • Donkey Kong (and Diddy Kong) has THREE hearts instead of TWO
  • UI meter does not have gauge for buddy system attack (Forgot what the exact name was ... Oh, right. The DECEMBER NINTENDO DIRECT ANNOUNCED THIS)

(Graphics)

  • When DK dives into the water for the first time, the coral surrounding the airplane propeller has been completely redesigned. The final release has less coral.
  • Rocks throughout the level are have larger pores.
  • Background dodos (when first encountered) are spaced differently
  • When DK uses his smash attack to break blocks underneath him, there are no star shaped particles
  • Smashable boxes in the viking section have swapped placement.
  • The beams on the viking ship are uniform in the E3 demonstration. In the final game, some of the beams are pulled out towards the camera.
  • Hidden area under the viking ship reveals slower. There is no shimmer.
  • Results screen following the completion of the level is different. The background is a silhouette based on the theme of the level. The final is a color background.
  • Result screen placement of snowflake watermarks are slightly different.
  • Donkey Kong and (optionally) Diddy Kong look toward the player rather than the results.
  • There is no platform the character is standing on.
  • Level puzzle piece is different. Is some sort of fruit instead of a bush with two curled vines.
  • Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong are not in the game. Dixie was announced and while a third partner character was confirmed, Cranky Kong wasn't confirmed until later.
