Hmmm...
To do:
  • Look through the level-specific packages for more unused content.
  • Find a copy of the demo... which is probably lost at this point. More details in the notes.
    • There are, however, screenshots of the demo floating around.
  • The North American version reportedly has one less corrupted cutscene than then European version.

Limbo of the Lost is a point-and-click adventure game for Windows. The game is notable for its bizarre story and characters, extremely long development, and a frankly astonishing quantity of assets blatantly stolen from other games of its time.

Unused Audio

Demo Leftover

THANKS DEMO END.ogg contains a message from Briggs thanking the player and asking them to come again. As the file name suggests, it would likely have been used at the end of the game's demo.

Unused Sense Lines

BREW SMELLS GOOD.ogg

SHRUG.ogg

TASTE YUCK.ogg

  • A shorter version of this clip which omits the lip smacking (YUCK.ogg) is used in the game.

Templates

"data/sprites/GFX TEMPLATES" contains a collection of placeholder graphics.

Findings

Game is based on the Wintermute adventure game engine. Looking through the game's .dcp archives with Universal Extractor 2. UE2 just downloads another extractor from some forum. I have the extractor and its source code, and I think I archived the forum page itself, so I'll put those on archive.org when I get the chance.

Wintermute script files are compiled into bytecode when packaged, so most of the logic in .script files is unreadable. Certain static text is still readable, including file paths, so it's still possible to identify files that aren't at all referenced. Unfortunately, there's currently no way of knowing if values are commented out.

data.dcp

Contains scripts and assets, both common throughout the game and for specific acts.

In data>sprites>GFX TEMPLATES, there are several placeholder assets for dialogue windows.

  • "blank 1024x768.jpg", which is a black box with the text "800 x 600 CUTSCENE" in the center. The file itself is indeed 1024 x 768.
  • "BRIGGS TALK.tga", a blank frame with the text "BRIGGS TALKING" in the center.

In data>sounds>BRIGGS, there is a file called "THANKS DEMO END.ogg", in which Briggs thanks the player for their help and asks them to come again.
