RE: Star Fox Assault
Hi there,
Firstly, an introduction: Like yourself, I have been a keen follower of this website for many years and was excited when a page for Star Fox Assault was created. While I can't call it a favourite, I always felt the game hid many secrets under its hood. But unlike many games, barely anything had been documented (aside from the odd forum here and there). And so, like yourself, I set about uncovering some stuff.
I made some discoveries and added them to this page (like Tricky being listed among the message senders, extra things hidden in the Briefing scenes, the file name oddities and the unused Vs mode level (which, to be honest, I'm not 100% sure is unused...)). Again, like yourself, I did this without consulting anyone, so apologies myself (I just wanted to hog the glory before someone claimed it :D). This was a few years ago now and, sadly, I have changed PCs since then - I transferred the results of my research across, but not the programs used (I don't think anyway, I'll double-check). I gather that Star Fox Assault has some weird file types, hence why not many are willing to touch it. That, coupled with time being scarce these days has meant I put this on indefinite hiatus.
Now that's out of the way, onto the matter of the sound files - I too found that spreadsheet from the Krystal Archive, but wanted to verify it. So did some digging and here's what I found...
They're all stored within the se folder. Only one of the file types contain the actual files (the CHD ones, I think). In terms of extracting them from the archives, I found one forum where someone had written some Python code to do so. It only worked with one specifically, so I did some seriously rough tweaking to get it to work with the rest of them. Even then, it didn't work with every archive & all the extracted files had the ending cut off... So that spreadsheet has better quality rips. But if nothing else, it confirmed that, yes, those files are on the disc :)
After documenting what every file contained, I began playing the game over & over again to see what was used/unused. There are some interesting exchanges, like Fox & Krystal flirting during Fortuna Surface level (rows 1083-1085 on the spreadsheet) that I'm fairly sure aren't used in the game... One that's very interesting is row 3083, which seems to have a completely different voice actor for Panther - maybe from the days of the E3 build.
And now that we're on the subject of the old voice actors, there's something I'd like to get your opinion on... Now you know what Peppy used to sound like, have a listen to row 2582 (from Orbital Gate - I've heard it a few times in-game) and all his taunts during the battle with the Aparoid Queen (the fight itself; not the cutscene before) - would you agree that they all sound weird? Like it's a completely different voice actor? I reckon they're all using Peppy's old actor from the E3 build.
I'll stop there before I get ahead of myself. Sorry for the wall of text! Just wanted to clarify/expand on/raise some points from your post.
I found out a couple more things before placing this on the shelf that weren't documented on the site. Most of it was found it using File Monitor in Dolphin & random Google searches - unfortunately I have no experience when it comes to archive extracting... But let me know if you're interested - it would be worth getting a second opinion on them & seeing if you can take them any further.
Thanks for your time & take care!
