The Sega Genesis Mini 2 is the successor to the Sega Genesis Mini, this time with 60 pre-installed games including Sega CD games! However, due to parts shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the system saw a smaller print run and limited distribution via Amazon.

The system also saw more bonus games than the first Genesis Mini, including new Genesis ports of Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier, Spatter, and Super Locomotive; two unreleased games in the form of Star Mobile and Devi & Pii; a watered-down port of Puyo Puyo Sun with only the versus mode; and a new version of Space Harrier II with proper sprite scaling. The Japanese system also included two new editions of Party Quiz Mega Q: Party Quiz Mega Q 2022 with new questions, and Party Quiz Sega Q with Sega-themed questions.

Also, two versions of the Genesis Mini 2 were also available thanks to Sega in Japan, one was the standard Japanese unit and the other was the American unit. Also, Sega released the Mega Drive Tower Mini 2, which contained a Mega-CD 2 unit, a Sonic CD disc, and a Virtua Racing cartridge. However, no international version for these accessories were made.

It's worth noting that by changing the system language, the player can access alternate region versions of most of the games included on any system. This also sets the game to the selected language in some games (though not all). On a US or European system, setting the system to Chinese or Korean will set games to Japanese.

On European systems, PAL versions of Crusader of Centy (Soleil), Mansion of Hidden Souls (Yumemi Mystery Mansion), OutRun, and Sonic 3D Blast (Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island) and the Japanese version of OutRunners replace the US versions on the English language setting, and games are set to the US versions on the Korean language settings, though the US versions are still available by setting the language to Chinese for Crusader of Centy, Korean for Mansion of Hidden Souls, OutRun, and OutRunners, and Japanese, Chinese, or Korean for Sonic 3D. Sonic CD and Robo Aleste also use the PAL versions, however the player is given the option to play the US versions when starting those games. Most PAL versions run at 50Hz except for Sonic 3D and Alien Soldier, which run at 60Hz instead.

Main Menu

  • The default design of the main menu in the US version is based off the packaging design of the Model 2 Genesis. Likewise, the European design is based off the PAL Mega Drive II packaging, and the Japanese design is based off the Japanese Mega Drive 2 packaging.
  • Changing the system language will change the menu design to the corresponding style as well as change the game boxes to reflect the region. On the European system, the PAL Mega Drive design is used when the language is set to English, French, or Spanish. On the North American NTSC system, setting the system to French or Spanish uses the NA menu settings (as these are common languages there).
