This is a sub-page of AI: The Somnium Files.

This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Hmmm...
To do:
Much more. This mode needs to be documented more thoroughly. All of the information is located on the Uchikoshi Discord server, but we need to transfer it to TCRF so users outside the Discord can access this mode.

How to Install Debug Mode

A debug mode exists in the final build of the game and hides a treasure trove of secrets. Install this tool using Melonloader to launch the PC release of the game in debug mode. The debug editor can play real time cutscenes, show portraits with lip sync, show character setups in investigation scenes, and edit flags in real-time.

You also need to extract the English LuaScript zip and stick that in the "Ai The Somnium Files\StreamingAssets" folder. If done correctly, the game will boot into a green screen with text.

Aiba would love Debug mode. She LOVES De Bugs.

(Source: Robotortoise for finding debug mode. Keycrasher for decompiling Lua code, [https://github.com/drojf @drojf for the free camera, GarnetSunset for assistance with the Melonloader code, and @slavanomics for the Melonloader code as well. A special shout-out to all the feverish fans in the Uchikoshi Discord that helped collaborate as a team and document this stuff! You guys are great.])

Built-in Debugging Tools

Animation Viewer

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Figure out how this works.

This tab has the title "Animation" and a film-roll icon, but by default has no functionality. It may require a model to be loaded and in focus.

BGM and SFX Player

On the right-hand side of the user interface sits a lone musical note icon. Click it, and you can override any music or sound currently playing with your sound effect or song of choice. They loop correctly, too!

Finally! You can now play BGM_WARNING_02 — the best song in the game — on loop!

Debug View

Acactussayswhat?
Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: Document these variables and check if the list changes during active gameplay

This displays and allows editing of a number of debug variables.

Flag View

Acactussayswhat?
Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: Document all of the flags. Their names are meaningful given context, so it should be doable, it's just a long list. Also, some additional flags can be added while playing the relevant scene.

This lists all flags in the game, and allows them to be toggled or modified. This includes some flags that enable debug behavior, as well as all event flags for progression through each scene in the game.

Event Viewer

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Figure out how this works.

This tab has the title "Event" and an arrow icon, but by default has no functionality. It may require a scene to be loaded and in focus.

Background Viewer

Despite the Japanese title of "Background Viewer" , this is more like an investigation scene viewer. It shows any investigative scene and the characters in it, but they are all T-posing. Any 'background' scenes with dynamic cameras where the characters don't move will also be visible in this viewer.

I wonder if you can investigate Ota really hard by punching him in the face. I'm asking for a friend that's not me.

Cutscene Viewer

Loads in-engine cutscenes. Go to the "SFG" dropdown after selecting background viewer to load up a cutscene, and click "reset" to stop the cutscene and then you can load a different one. If you do not press reset, the cutscenes will continually load over each other and eventually crash the game when it runs out of resources.

Cutscene viewer? More like butt scene viewer, am I right? (Please laugh. I have had very little sleep.)

Bust Viewer

Acactussayswhat?
Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: Document each expression. The discord has a list of each bust, but it needs to be formatted for TCRF.

Displays each character bust and expression as they appear in dialogue boxes. Upon each selection, the game plays a sample voice line to demonstrate lip flaps.

Pupil dilation and corneal turbidity indicate the victim is dead.

Debug Menu

Careful, you'll lose an eye.
This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

Start Game

Begins the game as normal, but with access to the debug tools.

Investigation Part

Acactussayswhat?
Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: Document what all of the options are, including "test" and "Z0".

Jump to any scene in the investigation part of the game, by selecting the chapter and then the individual scene.

Somnium Part

Jump to any Somnium gameplay sequence in the game.

Staff Roll

Displays the credits.

BG Viewer

Opens a blank display, where you can safely use the debug tools to load arbitrary backgrounds.

BG Viewer (Recording)

It is unclear what the difference is between this and "BG Viewer". Judging by the name and the names of scripts it loads, this mode was used by the developers to record any pre-rendered movie sections for the game.

Recording

Hmmm...
To do:
Document the order cutscenes are recorded. Bypass blocker videos and render all of them, there are still clips missing. Cross-reference info from the decompiled video_info.lua.

Plays a variety of short cutscenes in sequence through the "AI Sight" GUI, and renders video to a "Captures" sub-folder in the game folder, for use as prerendered segments in the final game. Several videos are set to loop and so prevent progress through the sequence, the first being a shot of Mizuki's Somnium, however editing game files to remove these videos allows the sequence to continue. Videos are rendered at a 45 degree angle so that they can display diagonally in-game. Each clip is rendered twice, once at 512x512 30FPS (for the Switch version, denoted by the suffix _1k_30) and once at 1024x1024 60 FPS (for the PC version, denoted by the suffix _2k_60). While playing the videos, in most cases, sound effects play, but not voice acting. However, some clips do have dialogue associated with them, particularly if they play that dialogue when viewed in the final game. However, the exported videos have no audio regardless. This mode seems to perform poorly with VSync enabled, potentially crashing. A table of the videos currently known to be rendered follows.

Filename Description In-game use Notes
Video_A2_begin10_10_BossRoom_Boss_00 Mizuki, sitting in the column of the carousel at Bloom Park, looks up at Date while holding a bloody ice pick. In her office, Boss discusses Mizuki with Date, during saikAI.
Video_A2_begin10_10_BossRoom_Boss_01 Date opens the column of the carousel at Bloom Park, and discovers Mizuki inside. Same as above.
Video_A2_begin30_20_LemLobby_Iris_Outa_00 A brief shot of Mizuki sitting in the column of the carousel at Bloom Park. Date discusses the discovery of Shoko's body with Iris and Ota at Lemniscate, during saikAI.
Video_A2_begin30_20_LemLobby_Iris_Outa_01 Mizuki and Ota discover Shoko's body. Ota runs off screaming Same as above. This is the first clip with associated dialogue.
Video_A2_begin40_20_DatesCar_Iris_00 A young Iris plays "Ratty Cakes". Denoted for use while Date is driving Iris to Bloom Park during saikAI, however... As with later flashbacks in kekkAI, the final game uses a full-screen flashback here, not AI Sight, so this video is unused.
Video_A2_begin70_10_SaganLDK_Hitomi_00 In Date's dream, Hiotmi lies bloody on the floor. When Iris takes Date home, he's shocked to see the woman from his dream alive, during saikAI.

Video_A2_wrap_10_10_Psync_Rm_Mizuki_Boss_Puta_01 Same as above, without the footprints. Date discusses Mizuki's Somnium with Boss and Pewter, during meikAI.
Video_A2_wrap_10_10_Psync_Rm_Mizuki_Boss_Puta_02 A shot of Mizuki's Somnium. Same as above. This is one of the looping clips that stalls the sequence.
Video_A2_wrap_10_10_Psync_Rm_Mizuki_Boss_Puta_03 Aiba stands in a black void in Mizuki's Somnium, near the birdcage with the balloons. Same as above. This is one of the looping clips, and also seems to be broken. This is maybe supposed to be the clip of Aiba putting together the torn photo when Date asks about her appearance.
Video_A2_wrap_10_10_Psync_Rm_Mizuki_Boss_Puta_04 The same clip of the blue figure leaving Bloom Park, with footprints. Same as above. This is the first example of a clip that is used multiple times being a redundant unique recording.
Video_A2_wrap_10_10_Psync_Rm_Mizuki_Boss_Puta_05 Aiba stands in place in Mizuki's Somnium. Same as above. This is another broken clip, this should be the clip of Aiba running in a circle. The directory of clips to record is mostly alphabetical, but this entry is at the bottom of the file, just above "Video_Test".
Video_A2_wrap_20_10_Bloom_Pk_Mizuki_00 The same clip of the blue figure in Bloom Park. Date and Mizuki search Bloom Park for traces of the figure seen in her Somnium, during meikAI.
Video_A3_begin10_10_BossRoom_Boss_Puta_00 Renju's body is discovered hanging from a fish hook in Sunfish Pocket. Date discusses the discovery of Renju's body with Pewter and Boss in her office, during syoukubAI.

Video_A3_begin40_10_Kumakura_Mouma_01 Chinpei tells Date "You made a big mistake coming here, go home". Date recalls that the Yakuza goons weren't sitting on the couch, and so the heat signature means someone else is hiding in the Kumakura office, during syokubAI. This clip has associated dialogue.
Video_A3_begin40_10_Kumakura_Mouma_02 Yogano reacts to Date coming in, "Who's this asshole?". Same as above. This clip has associated dialogue.

Date asks Ota what "that thing" was while calling him from the Psync Room, during rihAI. Because this clip features text, it is recorded 6 times in total, for each combination of language (jp, us, and zh_tw) and resolution/framerate.
Video_A3_wrap_20_10_Syokudou_Iris_Outa_Mayumi_00 In a message on Iris's phone, Ota can be seen promising not to tell anyone about "that thing". Date asks Ota what "that thing" was at the Diner, during rihAI. Again this clip is rendered in each text language.

This clip seems corrupt, as if it's just loaded the Somnium without any events. So's Somnium seems to consistently have issues with recording. This particular clip is strange and is uses a different time code (10_10) for what seems to be the same event as 22_10 below.
Video_D3_wrap_22_10_Psync_Rm_Sejima_Boss_Puta_00 Same as above. Date, Boss and Pewter question So after his Somnium, during kyuusAI. Same corruption as above.

Video_D5_begin85_10_SaitoAgt_Iris_00 The Psync Machine prepares for So Sejima's Psync. Date recalls "saving" Iris through So's Somnium as a way to prevent her seizure in the Kabasaki Chemical Plant, during dakkAI.
Video_D5_begin85_10_SaitoAgt_Iris_01 Iris reacts to Date bursting in after So Sejima's Psync. Same as above.
Video_D5_wrap_10_10_SaitoAgt_Iris_00 Iris hugs Date in the Lemniscate lobby, to blackmail him. Labelled for use as a flashback while Iris is dying in the Kabasaki Chemical Plant, during kekkAI. However... ...this sequence of clips seems to be unused, as in the final game the sequence of flashbacks here does not occur through AI Sight. These clips all have dialog associated.
Video_D5_wrap_10_10_SaitoAgt_Iris_01 Date gives Iris a piggyback after she collapses in Bloom Park. Same as above.
Video_D5_wrap_10_10_SaitoAgt_Iris_02 Iris performs "Invincible Rainbow Arrow" at Sunfish Pocket. Same as above. This clip is further notable amongst this sequence, because this scene isn't one of the flashbacks in the final game.
Video_D5_wrap_10_10_SaitoAgt_Iris_03 Date rescues Iris from Pewter's goons at the warehouse district. Same as above.
Video_D5_wrap_10_10_SaitoAgt_Iris_04 A young Iris plays "Ratty Cakes". Same as above.
Video_E4_wrap_10_10_Syokudou_Iris_Outa_Mizuki_00 Aiba destroys Iris's core in her Somnium. Date tells Iris and Ota that he doesn't believe her story, during kenzAI.
Video_E4_wrap_20_10_SaganLDK_Hitomi_00 Iris stumbles and almost collapses suddenly in Bloom Park. Hitomi explains Iris's brain tumour to Date at her home, during kenzAI.
Video_E4_wrap_20_10_SaganLDK_Hitomi_01 Iris collapses again at Ikume Shrine. Same as above.
Video_E5_begin10_10_SoukoGai_AiBall_00 Manaka's frozen body is discovered in the forklift. Aiba leads Date to the conclusion that the frozen body isn't Iris, during jutAI.
Video_E5_begin10_10_SoukoGai_AiBall_01 Aiba estimates Iris's weight while she rides piggyback in Bloom Park. Same as above. This clip has associated dialogue.
Video_E5_begin10_10_SoukoGai_AiBall_02 The same corrupt clip of So's Somnium. Same as above.
Video_E5_begin10_10_SoukoGai_AiBall_03 The clip of Manaka's body in the forklift. Same as above.
Video_E5_begin10_10_SoukoGai_AiBall_04 Same as above. Same as above.
Video_E5_wrap_10_10_Psync_Rm_Hitomi_00 Manaka's unearthed body, from Hitomi's Somnium. Hitomi explains the story of Manaka's death after her Psync, during kokkAI.
Video_E5_wrap_50_10_Psync_Rm_Hitomi_00 Manaka's frozen body in the forklift. Hitomi explains the story of Manaka's death after her Psync, during kokkAI.
Video_E6_begin10_10_SaitoAgt_Saito_01 #89 holds Pewter hostage in the interrogation room. Saito explains how he got Pewter's collaboration, during sousAI.
Video_E6_begin10_10_SaitoAgt_Saito_01 Same as above. Same as above.
Video_E6_begin10_10_SaitoAgt_Saito_02 Foreign mercenaries shoot at Date and Iris in Golden Yokocho. Same as above.
Video_E6_begin10_10_SaitoAgt_Saito_03 Same as above. Same as above.
Video_Somnnium_A4_01_01 A strange clip of Ota's Somnium with nothing of note in frame. This clip is extremely strange. It's evidently corrupt, and it loops. It's the only clip named for a Somnium chapter, when no Somnium features an AI Sight segment, and it's a clip of the same chapter it's supposed to be used in.
Video_Test The same clip of Shoko's body being discovered. Judging by the filename, rendered as a test of the video recording system. Obviously not used in the final game.

Dance

Loads Dance mode, the same as you'd unlock on the main menu after completing the game.

Text Language Selection

Choose the in-game text language. The debug menu itself does not have an English translation, but two options do change when language is set to English. Namely, "System Language Selection" becomes a duplicate of "Text Language Selection", and "Flowchart Debug 2" becomes a short corrupt string.

Voice Language Selection

Choose the in-game voice language.

System Language Selection

Hmmm...
To do:
Check what exactly this affects.

Choose the in-game system language.

Simulate Platform [Steam]

Hmmm...
To do:
Check if this has any meaningful effect.

Choose which platform the game believes it to be on. This does not change button prompts, but may stimulate other platform differences if they exist. Upon selection, "[Steam]" in the name will change to reflect your selection. The options are "Steam", "PS4", "XBOX" and "SWITCH".

UI Confirmation

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Determine what the "Scene Diagram" was supposed to be.

Opens a small variety of menus in the game. Options are "City Map", "File", an unused and missing "Scene Diagram", "Options", "Save" and "Flowchart".

Aging Mode

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Determine exactly how this mode makes a decision at a branch, if it's preset or random, if the game will ever reach Resolution Ending and/or stop.

Automatically plays through the game at extremely high speed. When the game reaches an ending, it restarts from the beginning, making different choices.

Initialize Read Flags

Hmmm...
To do:
Verify this.

Seems to reset the list of event flags to their default state.

Joypad

Opens a menu which displays input values for a game controller.

Confirm Global Flags

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Determine what this option is supposed to do.

Selecting this option causes a lua error.

April Milestone Build

Opens a menu with "Somnium Part" and "From the start of the scenario". The former tries to load a non-existent file, and the latter starts the game from the beginning. This may have been for testing the game's demo, which consists of the Bloom Park investigation and Mizuki's Somnium, but the relevant files are not in the final game.

PadView

Hmmm...
To do:
PadView seems to be an external piece of software, perhaps from the Unity Asset Store? Would be good to find and confirm this.

An alternate controller input display.

Flowchart Debug

Toggle each node in the flowchart between locked, unlocked and completed.

File Debug

Toggles each item in the game's collectible "files" between locked, unread, and read.

Trophy Debug

Toggles each achievement in the game on or off. This affects your real Steam account, so be careful!

Flowchart Debug 2

Acactussayswhat?
Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: Document the specific effects of each of these options.

Toggles flowchart states relating to the game's system of "The case remains unsolved" plot locks.
