Version Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
Create a gameplay section and figure out the changes that Version 1.07 made to it.

Five unique versions of Alien Gate are known to exist. Identified by their abstract version numbers and file dates, they are:

  • Version 1.06, the original European release. Dated January 21st, 1993.
  • Version 1.07, a revision of said release. Dated February 18th, 1993.
  • Version 2.08, found on a USA demonstration disc. It's unknown if it's a prototype or a copy of an undumped US version. Dated July 14th, 1993.
  • Version 2.09, given to two nearly-identical revisions made for the US and Europe. Both are dated August 5th, 1993.

Menus

  • A password system (and the "YOU MADE IT!" message that displays every five levels) was added in Version 2.08.
    • Two menu options had to be changed to accommodate it; Start Game was shifted to the left, and Hall of Fame was renamed to Highscores.

  • The full NVRAM message was rewritten and had its font changed to the one used on the main menu.

Text

  • The disc title of Versions 1.06 and 1.07 is "THE ALIEN GATE". Future versions would change it to just "Alien Gate".
  • Said versions also have empty bibliographic/copyright files, while the abstract file only has the program version line. Starting with Version 2.08, these files are properly filled out.

JUST REMEMBER THAT RIPOFFS DAMAGE YOUR KARMA.
  • Both of the no copying messages were replaced with new ones in Version 2.08. In addition, a typo was corrected in the scrolling text (indispensible to indispensable).
  • Version 2.08's bibliographic file misspells Philips Interactive Media as Philips Interacive Media, which was fixed in Version 2.09.
  • A small section of the scrolling text (right before the second no copying message) was removed in Version 2.09:
PUT ON YOUR PERIL-SENSITIVE SUNGLASSES AND ENJOY ...

Misc.

  • All three European versions have three tracks on the disc; the game's data, the intro music, and the Hall of Fame/high scores music. Both US versions merge the data/intro music tracks into one.
  • Two files were renamed in Version 2.08 - path_tbl to path_tbm and spc_demo to cdi_gate.
