Bugs:Mario Kart: Super Circuit

This page details bugs of Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

Not only the file structure and formats but also the physics and controls are so similar to Super Mario Kart that even the same physics related and some track specific bugs can be found in Super Circuit.

Since in Super Circuit a few new control methods like Spin Turn (hold brake and accelerate to turn in place) and reverse have been added, there are even more, new bugs.

Extra Boosts

Off-Road Boost

Just like in Super Mario Kart, jump and hold R and then make numerous left and right motions until you are about to hit the off-road (dirt, grass, etc.), then jump, make one final countersteer, and release R. You will boost through the off-road with full speed.

This can be seen in the video on the right at 0:20 and in the rest of the video.

Long Boost

Also found in Super Mario Kart. Find a corner or wall where you can bump into and have a wide, clear space ahead.

As you get near the wall, release B and at the same time use a Mushroom to get a boost. Then jump against the wall and continue to hold L/R at least until you've landed and the boost has peaked. The boost will take a very long time to die down. This also works when using a boost panel instead of a mushroom.

This can be seen in the video on the right at 1:42.

Lap Skip Glitches

Laps can be skipped in a number of ways, usually through some difficult tricks.

Super Mario Kart Tracks

All the lap skip glitches you can do on the unlockable tracks from Super Mario Kart have remained in Super Circuit, except for the ones that require the feather item.

See here for the Super Mario Kart lap skip bugs.

The new spin turn, however, allows two more lap skips on Koopa Beach 1 and Rainbow Road as the spin turn can be performed in mid-air and can be used to trick the finish line. Some of the older lap skips, like the ones for the Ghost Valley tracks (especially Ghost Valley 3), can also be done much faster now with the spin turn, since you can prevent falling off the track with a spin turn in the air.

  • Koopa Beach 1 Seen in the video at 31:27
  • Rainbow Road Seen in the video at 37:47
  • Ghost Valley 1 Seen in the video at 22:43
  • Ghost Valley 2 Seen in the video at 26:28
  • Ghost Valley 3 Seen in the video at 36:30

Funnily enough, the lap skip for Koopa Beach 1 was found even before the release of the game, shown in a debugging tape from Nintendo, but still wasn't patched out for the final release.

Super Circuit Tracks

Riverside Park

In Riverside Park you can drive past the wall to the left of the finish line and encounter an Out Of Bounds field. After a lap is counted and Lakitu places the driver in front of the finish line after driving through the Out Of Bounds field, another lap is counted immediately after driving through the finish line.
This can be seen in the video above at 2:10

Beach Tracks

It's possible to trick the finish line by driving around it in the water. This is because the actual finish line, which detects when a driver passes over it, is set too short on these tracks, which allows driving around it. The game does not notice that the driver crosses the line in the wrong direction and thinks that a full lap has been completed.

  • Shy Guy Beach Can be seen at 1:24
  • Cheep Cheep Beach Can be seen at 10:21

Sky Garden

Same Bug as above, but this time the finish line was set so short, that it is possible to easily drive around it by doing a Spin Turn with a boost in midair.
