This is a sub-page of Development:Pokémon Black and White/Sprites.
This article is a work in progress. ...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes. |
This page or section needs more images. There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this. |

Character Overworld Sprites
Hilbert
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Completely identical to the final barring two differently shaded pixels on his hat outline.
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Hilbert's fishing sprites are subtly off-model; his hair is the same color as the edge of his hat brim instead of dark brown. The back of his hat has more shading than on the final, and the Poké Ball logo on his hat has a few more pixels that use the same color as the brim.
Hilda
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Her hair and shoes are tinted purple and the upper-leftmost pixel on her cowlick is purple instead of black. Her sprite is also flipped from the final version. Notably, this changes many of her animations.
Cheren
Rev17560 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Has a completely different black and grey outfit. The bridge of his glasses has more pixels and is a darker shade of red, and he's missing the ahoge on his head.
Professor Juniper
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Professor Juniper's prototype sprite is slightly taller than the final version and features more defined arms, a green labcoat and shirt instead of pale blue, and brown eyes instead of blue.
Cilan
Rev16463 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Cilan's prototype sprite is missing his apron, and the shading by his eyes is above them instead of on the same row as his pupils. Additionally, his suit is slightly darker compared to the final.
Chili
Rev16463 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Chili's prototype sprite is missing his apron, has an orange bow tie and hair instead of red, has a less fiery-looking hair style, and has eyebrows that the final sprite lacks.
Cress
Rev16463 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Cress' prototype sprite is missing his apron, has a cyan bow tie and hair instead of indigo blue, has darker blue eyes, and his hair is styled as a bowl cut instead of it covering his right eye.
Lenora
Rev22353 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Prototype version has a lower-sitting headband with a different pattern and her apron is tan instead of pink.
Burgh
Rev22353 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Burgh's prototype sprite takes a much wider stance than his final design. He lacks his red scarf and his outfit is much darker than the final. His sleeves are cuffed and he is wearing brown shoes rather than green. Face-wise, his eyes are one pixel tall rather than two and his hair is longer, wavier, and less shaded.
Elesa
Rev16456 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Her overworld sprite lacks stockings and her headphones are more curved than in the final.
Clay
Rev22353 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Compared to the final sprite, prototype Clay's facial features are much less defined and he lacks hair (he's described as “balding at the top” in early character profiles). His hat curves upwards further and his outfit in much more washed-out in the prototype sprite as well.
Skyla
Rev22353 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Completely different design than the final. Skyla's early sprite appears to lean closer to her early character pitches, which describe her as a dark-skinned South American/Hispanic character based on Jennifer Lopez (who is Hispanic, but not South American) and Isabeli Fontana (who is South American, but not Hispanic). Curiously, an accompanying in-battle sprite for Skyla (likely created after the overworld one due to its substantial deviations from the pitch) depicts her with blue hair and light skin. Her final sprite features a complexion in-between the two, being much lighter than the early overworld sprite but still slightly darker than both her early battle sprite and other light-skinned characters in the game. The final design also features a much different hairstyle and outfit.
Brycen
Rev22353 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
He has a much darker skin color and hair and wears a much shorter robe that shows his pants. He also wears a face mask instead of a domino mask in the final, covering his mouth.
Grimsley
Rev22640 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
He has blonde hair instead of blue-black hair (coincidentally resembling Barry from the Generation IV games as a result) but otherwise is identical to the final.
Marshal
Rev22640 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Marshall's prototype sprite is identical to the final aside from using a brighter shade of green for his mouthguard and outfit.
Caitlin
Rev22253 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Caitlin's prototype sprite is nearly identical to the final version, but has sparkles emanating from her hair decorations and lacks four darker pink pixels on her arms.
Alder
Rev22253 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Alder's prototype sprite has a green poncho instead of tan, the red part of his hair is more orange and is drawn differently, and his teeth are visible.
N
Rev18328 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
N's prototype sprite has darker brown pants, a brighter white shirt, two lighter brown pixels on his ears, and his hat is two shades of brown instead of the final's black and white. The prototype sprite also has two transparent pixels that are colored as part of N's hair on the final sprite.
Ghetsis
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Completely identical to the final barring two differently colored pixels on the bottom-right section of his... cloak?
Ingo
Rev22353 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Ingo's prototype sprite has flatter shading and brighter colors overall, especially on his tie (which is red instead of blue) and hat band. The emblem on his hat is also different; the sides are red and the middle stripe is white, while the final sprite has blue sides and a dark blue stripe. Minor differences include his mouth being colored red, his ears curving up and around his head instead of being level, and the whites of his eyes actually being light grey.
Emmet
Rev22353 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Emmet's prototype sprite has most of the same differences compared to his final sprite as Ingo does, save for a misplaced white pixel in his right eye that was corrected to light grey on the final sprite.
Pokémon Overworld Sprites
Victini
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Uses what would become Victini's Shiny palette. Sprite is larger and more proportionate than the final version. A stray red pixel is present near the upper-right corner.
Cobalion
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Smaller overall, with less exaggerated design elements compared to final. Differences include its body being teal instead of aqua blue, gray leg fins instead of yellow, a shorter blaze of white on its front, having a red underbelly, and lacking the final version's bootlike hooves.
Terrakion
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Not as wide as the final version. Has red markings by its eyes and an orange belly that the final lacks, and the orange protrusions appear to be positioned further back on its body and have three lobes per side instead of the one visible on the final sprite.
Virizion
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Its head is smaller, having less bulky horns, a teal forehead instead of black, and blue eyes instead of pink. Its body is narrower than the final and more prominently features a brighter shade of yellow than the final sprite uses.
Keldeo
Rev18328 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Taller than the final sprite and drawn at a slightly different angle, with Keldeo appearing to look directly forward instead of down. Its hooves and eyes are both red; the final sprite has blue hooves and black eyes. A stray tan pixel is present near the upper-right corner.
Tornadus
Rev18328 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Drastically different compared to the final version, sporting blue and grey skin with yellow spots on one arm, legs, purple eyes and horns, a tan lower body instead of a cloud, and a white puffy tail. Has a single horn on its head instead of two, making it look more like Thundurus' final design. Sprite has a stray purple pixel near the upper-right corner.
Thundurus
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Drastically different compared to the final version, sporting purple and grey skin with blue spots on one arm, red eyes and horns, a tan lower body instead of a cloud, and a lobed tail with blue spots and no spikes. Has two horns on its head instead of one, making it look more like Tornadus' final design. Sprite has a stray purple pixel near the upper-right corner.
Landorus
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
A sepia-toned recolor of the Thundurus sprite used at the same point in development, down to the stray pixel.
Reshiram
Rev22398 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Wings are held at a different angle that makes their undersides visible, with the claws on them being orange. Other differences include the protrusions at the base of its mane being missing, said mane lacking flow and looking more like horns, a lack of definition on the foot claws, and the tufts on its legs being more prominent.
Zekrom
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Tail is drawn at a different angle, with more of the end being visible behind Zekrom's head than the final version, and there's no blue glow visible behind its body. Other differences include the legs facing directly forward instead of being at an angle, the head crest curving off to one side, and more conspicuous irises.
Kyurem
Rev18660 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Kyurem's prototype design bears little similarity to the final version, having a quadrupedal stance, pupils in its eyes, and a primarily purple and pale grey color scheme; the only shared element is the conical spikes at the ends of its wings. The sprite has a 2x2 wide clump of stray purple pixels near the upper-right corner.
Meloetta
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Prototype Meloetta's design is drastically different from its final. It has a cricket-like appearance and is singing rather than idling like the final Meloetta sprite.
Overworld Element Sprites
Plasma Flag Stand
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Prototype version is extremely rough compared to the final. The bottom of the banner is asymmetrical and the sprite lacks a base. The prototype sprite is also unanimated unlike the final release, which has a swaying animation.
Electroweb
Rev22706 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Web is rounder and colored grey. Consequently, it doesn't look electrified at all.
Dark Stone
Rev13203 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Prototype sprite is an oval with simple shading instead of the final version's sphere with indentations.
Light Stone
Rev13203 | Final |
---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
Has the same differences compared to the final sprite as the Dark Stone.
Removed Sprites
Genesect
Genesect has an overworld sprite that is completely removed from the final release. Its cannon is much less pronounced, and it lacks the disc drive present in the final design. This sprite has no rotations, and can only face forwards.
Zoroark
Zoroark has an overworld sprite that is completely removed from the final release. Interestingly, the Zoroark sprites found in the prototype are the same as those found in BW2's final release.
