  • All the flowers were removed from the route.
  • The Nurse Joy NPCs are present, likely for placeholder and testing purposes.

Route 103

Final Rs-Route 103 final.png
  • The western part of Route 103 initially had less patches of grass and straighter ledges, notably in the area where the player's Rival stands for the first battle. It also mirrors what was seen in the build.
  • Part of the western coast is four blocks bottom on both the top and bottom, and the rocks keeping you from going upriver all use one graphic.
  • The maze keeping you away from the Berry trees on the east coast doesn't exist, meaning you can just walk up and pick them.
  • The western coast is a little different. There are less different rocks as barriers to keep you from going upriver, and no decorative rocks outside. It's not a maze to get to the Berry trees in the proto. There's also a patch of tall grass on the east side, and... oh yeah... more flowers.

Route 102

Final RS-Route 102 final.png

The small pond near the Oldale Town entrance doesn't exist yet, and the sign nearby was moved to the left for the final game. The ledge near where the pond is in the final game was moved to the left a few titles for release, and the area above it is a little larger in the early map. The path gets a little wider before entering Petalburg in the early map. And flowers, of course.

Route 104

PKMNRS-Route 104 from xls.png PKMNRS-Route 104 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 104 (02 08 24).png PKMNRS-Route 104 Final.png

South:

The door into Mr. Briney's house is 2 tiles wide, with two half tiles extending the entrance. Like on Route 103, all flowers were pruned from the route except for the ones on the ledge near Petalburg Woods' alternate exit, which are grouped more closely together in the final map. The path past the first patch of grass is a cleaner-looking in the final game, and there's an extra row of trees between the grass patch to the right of the Petalburg entrance and the soft soil patch.

North:

The patch of grass on this route is not accessible from the Pretty Petal Flower Shop and must be reached by crossing the bridge over the pond, which is completely straight and uses different graphics. The path towards Rustboro was adjusted to compensate. Flowers were either removed or repositioned next to (appropriately) the flower shop and the soft soil patch on the north side. There's no sign on the south side, nor is there a Cut tree, and the little "item nook" on the side of the pond was moved from the east side to the west. Either the Twins aren't on this map, or they're being represented by one NPC. The north side, meanwhile, is dry and puddle-free.

This is probably not the map used in the Festa 2002 demo, but the bridge does match the one seen in the video.

Route 116

Final PKMNRS-Route 116 Final.png

The western half of the route was completely redesigned, including a paved road leading to the entrance of Rusturf Tunnel instead of the more natural environment seen in the final game, with all of the tall grass located off-path. What is presumably the workers' rest house is located further west than in the final game. The eastern half of the route stayed mostly the same, apart from some slight adjustments. Notably, the main entrance to Rusturf Tunnel is located where the alternate exit to the tunnel is located in the final game. The two Secret Base spots are still in the cliff next to the old entrance. (Look closely for the cracks in the wall, the one upstairs has moved left a bit.) A third one was added whenever Rusturf gained its alternate exit.

Route 105

Besides the diversification of barrier rocks, Route 105 is just a plain vertical water route at this point in development. The sandbars haven't been added yet, nor has the Island Cave. (This tracks with how the Regi trio were some of the last Pokémon added to the game.)

Route 106

Final PKMNRS-Route 106 Final.png

More barrier rock diversification. Granite Cave was extended backward and downward for the final version. The decorative island on the right side gained a few extra tiles on top.

Route 107

Final PKMNRS-Route 107 Final.png

Barrier rocks and tree adjustments. The west coast of Dewford Town's island is a bit shorter and more natural-looking in the final map.

Route 108

Another plain water route that was later spruced up with some shallows and a new location to explore, in this case the Abandoned Ship.

No sandbars in the early map. The coastline was adjusted a bit for the final game and the Seashore House was added, causing some umbrellas to have to be repositioned.

Route 110

No Trick House or New Mauville yet. A Secret Base tree is present where New Mauville would be in the final game; when the entrance was added, it was moved to its own island. Cycling Road is one-way from Mauville to Slateport at this point, and has no gate houses at its entrance or exit. (As a result, this early version of Hoenn has no gate houses at all.) When the gate houses were added, a patch of tall grass near the entrance to the route shrunk and a gap in the fence the player could use to access the sea was removed. A few signs and trees were adjusted as a result of the previous changes, and some of Cycling Road's support columns were adjusted.

Route 111

More trees and sand patches were added to the south half of the route, while the Rock Smash boulders were moved north. The Winstrates' house uses different graphics and lacks the crescent-shaped pond outside, which means the map would have had no water encounters. Visible in the early map are early graphics for the cliffside Secret Base locations which practically blend in with the surrounding cliff face; they fortunately gained some new, more obvious graphics in the final game. The Desert Ruins were added for the final game, causing the southern half of the desert to open up drastically and forcing a few Secret Base spots to relocate to a newly added cliff area only accessible with the Mach Bike. There are no Mach Bike slopes at all in this early version (or Acro Bike ledges, for that matter), implying there was only one bicycle implemented when the maps were developed.

A few one-way ledges were added north of the desert. The rest house found here is missing in the early version, as is the Secret Base tree...

Route 112

PKMNRS-Route 112 xls.png PKMNRS-Route 112 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 112 (02 08 24).png PKMNRS-Route 112 Final.png

...because it was originally here! In fact, it was the only reason to visit the route's north half at this point, because the Fiery Path and Jagged Pass didn't exist yet. As a direct result of the aforementioned, you could just walk straight west to enter Lavaridge Town at this point in development.

The Cable Car station was redesigned to look much less... circus-like, as was the Cable Car itself, which is visible outside the building. The Cable Car ropeway has no visible support columns in the early version. Mt. Chimney has more foliage on its slopes in the final version. A little zigzag in the path leading up to the base of Mt. Chimney was removed, but a patch of tall grass and a small crag were added to the south half of the route, and another patch of grass grew on the north half.

Route 113

PKMNRS-Route 113 xls.png PKMNRS-Route 113 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 113 (02 08 24).png PKMNRS-Route 113 Final.png

Similar, apart from the lack of Glass Workshop. A few cliff and tall grass tiles were repositioned, and a Secret Base nook was added to a rock in the middle of the area for the final version. Fallarbor Town's crop fields are a bit more fruitful in the early version. The unique cliff faces and ground tiles starting around the Fallarbor entrance were completely redrawn to look more natural.

Route 114

PKMNRS-Route 114 xls.png PKMNRS-Route 114 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 114 (02 08 24).png PKMNRS-Route 114 Final.png

A few crop fields outside the Fossil Maniac's house were replaced with ponds. The large lake is a little larger in the final version, the bridge spanning it is thinner, and the island with the Secret Base tree was repositioned a bit. The ledge atop the waterfall that holds a Rare Candy in the final game was flipped to the opposite side of the ledge.

The southern half of the route stayed mostly the same, except for a few adjusted tiles and the addition of a few one-way ledges, more grass patches, and Lanette's house. There's one more Secret Base spot outside Meteor Falls in the final version.

Route 115

PKMNRS-Route 115 xls.png PKMNRS-Route 115 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 115 (02 08 24).png PKMNRS-Route 115 Final.png

There are fewer one-way ledges on the southern half of the route, making it much more open in the final version. The final version adds a patch of soft soil that can only be accessed by passing through Meteor Falls or with Surf; the area around it was made more natural-looking with a couple more trees. The sign outside Meteor Falls was moved closer to its entrance for the final game. There are fewer decorative sand patches in the final version, and the coastlines were adjusted a bit. The forest in the north half of the route was made more mazelike in the final game and gained a Secret Base tree. The elevation of the north half of the route changed up a bit, making one set of stairs a tile taller and adding a Mach Bike section with a few new Secret Base spots.

Route 117

ME2 emerald\031017_2map\bmp\02_08_24 PKMNRS-Route 117 (02 08 24).png
Final PKMNRS-Route 117 Final.png

More flower removal on the right half of the route. The Day Care building is a tile wider than in the final game, and the rocks in the playground area extend north off the top of the map. The ledges on the eastern half of the route were replaced with trees, and travelers on the lower half of the route no longer have to pass through a grass patch in the final game. The two existing flower gardens were made larger, while a third flower garden was removed and replaced with two ponds and another patch of tall grass. Some of the signs were repositioned, and one of them was removed. There are no "secret" areas in the early version of the map.

Route 118

ME2 emerald\031017_2map\bmp\02_08_24 PKMNRS-Route 118 (02 08 24).png
Final PKMNRS-Route 118 Final.png

Most of the almost-entirely-decorative ledges on the western half didn't exist yet. The sea on the south side no longer connects with the north edge of the map, which is instead a cliff face. In fact, the ledges allowing you to jump down to shore on the eastern side also used to be cliffs. Since the final loved to add so many ledges, additional ledges were added on the west side perpendicular to the road. The path in the proto leading north was a bit larger and more sprawling, but also had trees nearby. The cliff face where the Secret Base spot sits was lengthened when those trees were removed. Another tree Secret Base was added along the treeline when they were adjusted.

Route 119

PKMNRS-Route 119 xls.png PKMNRS-Route 119 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 119 (02 08 24).png PKMNRS-Route 119 Final.png

The addition of a river bisecting the route and the Weather Institute resulted in almost every single aspect of this route changing, to the point a full comparison is basically pointless. The general layout remains the same -- a giant thicket of grass on the bottom, a long bridge in the middle, a shorter bridge in the top half, and the exit to Fortree City in the upper right.

Of note, this is the only location in the final game where Feebas can be caught, yet the early incarnation of the map obviously lacks the water needed to do so.

Route 120

PKMNRS-Route 120 xls.png PKMNRS-Route 120 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 120 (02 08 24).png PKMNRS-Route 120 Final.png

The little lake on the northern edge of the map is gone, and with it the entrance to Scorched Slab, one of the most minor dungeons ever created. The bridge that would have been there goes north-to-south over the path instead. The final has a generally clear, puddled portion just south of that where only Trainers fight you, which is instead turned into a winding spiral of tall grass and Trainers up to that bridge that would allow you to continue your journey. There's a ledge keeping you from going back to the bridge, but another ledge on the west side that would put you back in the spiral. All of this was replaced by a simple tall grass maze full of trainers in final.

All the water missing from the north side seems to be on the south side instead. A few spots that can only be Surfed to are removed, instead having only one large one in the final with a Secret Base. The entrance to the Ancient Tomb, the resting place of Registeel, is missing in this map, and in fact the area where that entire plateau would be is just part of the path out of this route. The road leading out is a much more straight cliff between water bodies than in the final.

A few more bush Secret Base spots were added in final, including one near the site of the Ancient Tomb.

Route 121

Final PKMNRS-Route 121 Final.png

The fence maze hadn't been conceived of when this map was created. This version of the map is instead a straight shot through some grass and down the cliff to Lilycove. The Safari Zone building isn't here, either. There's an extra spot down the cliff where a Secret Base tree was, which was moved up next to the Safari Zone entrance in the final.

Route 122

Mt. Pyre apparently had Berry soil in this version. Some rocks blocking you from the north side of the route were removed, since to be fair you're already blocked by the mass of Mt. Pyre itself.

Route 123

ME2 emerald\031017_2map\bmp\02_08_24 PKMNRS-Route 123 (02 08 24).png
Final PKMNRS-Route 123 Final.png

This wasn't always a one-way road! In the final, one-way ledges would allow you to only traverse this Route from the Mt. Pyre side, and the whole path is winding. There's only one extra Berry soil patch in this map, and it's only accessible via Surfing from its north side. A bunch of decorative rocks were added when the ledges were.

Unfortunately, the Berry Master's house is closed.

Route 124

PKMNRS-Route 124 xls.png PKMNRS-Route 124 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 124 (02 08 24).png PKMNRS-Route 124 Final.png

The first big water route has some changes. In the final, there's a portion on the north side that can only be accessed via Dive, but in this old map there doesn't seem to be any use for Dive at all here! There's a lot more large, rocky islands that can be Surfed to, and a small wooded island that's only accessible from another route.

The Treasure Hunter's house is entirely missing from this version. You can Surf directly to Route 125 in this version, whereas in the final you would have to go to Mossdeep and Surf north.

Route 125

ME2 emerald\031017_2map\bmp\02_08_24 PKMNRS-Route 125 (02 08 24).png
Final PKMNRS-Route 125 Final.png

The continuation of the rocky islands from Route 124 were removed, since this map no longer connects to that map directly. Because of this, all the rocky islands were moved into the area where Shoal Cave rests, including their associated Secret Bases.

It's a bit of a surprise that, of all the dungeons in the final game, Shoal Cave is one of the only ones to appear on this map. It has very little plot relevance and isn't a required dungeon like some of the others.

Route 126

PKMNRS-Route 126 xls.png PKMNRS-Route 126 (roadのラベル表ver1.00).png PKMNRS-Route 126 Final.png

The Dive area in this version is surprisingly similar to final. Some of the Dive portion in the northwest were sequestered off such that you need to Dive up to them to access them, which they had apparently thought of given the ring of rocks surrounding one of the Dive surface spots. Other than that, the decorative rocks blocking you from going out to sea were diversified.

Route 127

Again, the shape of the Dive surface spots are extremely similar, but this route hadn't been fleshed out otherwise. A few more Dive surface spots were added when actual content was added to this route.

Route 128

Final PKMNRS-Route 128 Final.png

The surface part of the entrance to Seafloor Cavern is here, but the little Dive spot in its center isn't. The Dive area doesn't connect to the northern terminus of the route in this version. A few cliffs were added to spice up the barrier walls, and rocks were put on top of the submerged sandbars.

There's nothing here. Mirage Island doesn't seem to be present in the earliest tilemap, at least not on this route. Mirage Island was going to be more ambitious with many caves to explore.

Mirage Island was moved to Route 130 in the final game, assuming this odd area is Mirage Island.

This square area is covered in rocks that have Secret Base Spots, as well as trees and bushes that are also Secret Base spots. Maybe it was used for Secret Base testing?

The water current tiles that would keep you from going east out of Slateport don't seem to exist yet, but there are Dive tiles that might indicate this as a planned feature. The final map only has a single Dive spot that would take you to Sealed Chamber, which would unlock the Regi caves for you. None of the other Regi caves exist, either, so this tracks.

Otherwise there's no land here, just water and water and water.
