This is the first Index and it contains the full roster of Pokemon for Ruby/Sapphire as of late 2001. Please note that some of the Pokémon designs on that list also received feedback from the developers.
Pokémon is near final. | 2 |
Pokémon is developed but has some differences. | 3 |
Pokémon has some shared attributes to final version. | 5 |
Cut Pokémon. | 9 |
Proto # | Final # | Final Name (EN) | Proto | Final | Proto Name (JP) | Final Name (JP) | Notes | Status | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Donkii |

Sprites almost match the final aside from some shading differences, and some body proportion differences. | 2 | ||||
Perikyan |
Pelipper |
Uses a very different head shape compared to final. Beak resembles a bag or bandana. Redesigned due to looking "too much like a pelican". |
3 | ||||
Yamanonushi |
Konohana |
Early design for Nuzleaf, using a darker color scheme and more of a tengu motif that would be seen in Shiftry. Based on developer feedback, the heavier focus on the tengu motif seemed to be the reason behind the redesign. |
5 | ||||
Boyatto |
-- | A cut yeti-like Pokémon with a mouth on its foot. According to the received feedback, the developers simply wanted a different color scheme, but it seems a different color scheme was never found. Resembles a similar yeti-like Pokémon cut from Pokémon Red and Green, which resembled Woo from Ultraman. |
9 | ||

Camome |
A bee Pokémon that had its stats reused by Wingull. This sprite can be seen on Wingull's scratchpad. | 5 | ||||
Tottā |
-- | Name may be a transliteration of "totter." Later renamed to Kurobosshi, the Black Stone Pokémon. Evolved into Claydol. | 9 | ||

Sukāku |
Samehader |
Earlier design for Sharpedo, having a tail and a darker color scheme. Prototype name is likely a combination of "scar" and "shark.". May have been based on the scrapped Gen 2 'Ikari (#301)' shark design, given it has a similar pose to Ikari and that earlier design may have been based off an anchor if you look closely. | 3 | ||||
Dobūkai |
Nendoll |
Similar to final, although uses a different color scheme. | 3 | ||||

Monorabi |
-- | A rabbit Pokémon, scrapped as, according to developer feedback, "it looks misshapen". Name may be short for "mono-rabbit," as it has only one ear. | 9 | ||

-- | A stump Pokémon with a bulbous red nose, scrapped due to an overlap with Sudowoodo. | 9 | ||
Rikugin |

-- | A cut frog Pokémon which resembles one of Politoed's earlier designs. Its tongue resembles a clef note, and its name seems to be a combination of kerokero (ribbit) and "melody." Scrapped as, according to developer feedback, it needed "to be more different from Politoed". |
9 | ||
Kodomon |
-- | An Oni Pokémon, scrapped as, according to developer feedback, it looked too much like a monster from the Dragon Quest series. Name uses kodomo (child). Round shape and short limbs resemble Ludicolo. | 9 | ||
Mossmy |
-- | A scrapped water moss Pokémon. May be an early design for Cacnea. Evolved into Kodomon. | 9 | ||

2 | ||||
Pūchi |
-- | A scrapped poodle Pokémon. | 9 | ||
Furikusu |

Nuckrar |
A slightly different design for Trapinch, with smaller eyes and a more detailed body. Would replace #403. Its name may be a combination of pakuri (wide/gaping, as of a mouth) and the suffix -kun. Pakkun is also the Japanese name for Piranha Plants. According to developer feedback, they wanted this Pokémon to evolve into Vibrava, which would explain why the previously planned pre-evolution got replaced with this. |
3 | ||||

5 | ||||

Donmel |
Sprites almost match the final aside from some shading differences, the lack of a back hole, and a different tuft of hair. According to developer feedback, this design didn't look enough like a pre-evolution for Camerupt. Sprites
This is a second set of Sprites dated March 2002 and bundled alongside the art. Unlike the 2001 index that contained every Pokemon sans 391, this index is incomplete and only contains a few Pokemon. Compared to the 2001 index, several Pokemon were shuffled around.
