Drunken «Procedurally animated» robot utility B.U.D. must climb mountains, expand flora and flower-glide his way in order to Grow Home.

Early Localization Strings

ArkLocalisation.txt is a full set of strings leftover from when the game was an in-house project under the name Ark. Apart from having an incomplete French translation, it mentions a number of cut features such as an "Animal Collection", unlocking levels and using creatures' abilities for attack and traversal. It's also filled with lots of amusing prompts.

Bestiary Mode

According to some of the strings featured in the previous file, B.U.D. was capable of befriending creatures and "storing" them in an Animal Collection. B.U.D. then would be able to call them and use their abilities when required. This idea appears to have been shelved mid-development, as a myriad of textures pertaining to the corresponding menu are still present. Some of the unlockable Posters in the final game showcase some of the critter's designs in various stages of production.

The BestiaryMenuHandler class contained in Assembly-CSharp.dll provides a list of all the animals meant to be implemented.

"Aardvark", "Biggoat", "Bull", "Crocodile", "Diplodocus", "Dodo", "Dog", "Giraffe", "Kangaroo", "Klipspringer", "Lion", "Mammoth", "Ostrich", "Panther", "Penguin", "Pig", "Rabbit", "Sheep", "Specialanimal1", "Specialanimal2", "Stegosaurus", "T-Rex", "Triceratops", "Turtle"

Creatures

Full renders of at least sixteen different creatures with their corresponding silhouettes, three of which only made it to the final game under different names (highlighted in italics). Interestingly, some of these have origami-like designs instead of the stylized low-poly look of the finished product. This set also suggests that B.U.D. may have roamed with dinosaurs at one stage.

Abilities

A near complete collection of UI elements pertaining to almost every creature listed above, plus their correspondent gimmick. While five of the lot were seemingly available to be chosen, at least 23 of the damn things were intended to be interacted with.

The following list indicates their placement and usage, inferred by filenames:

  1. Locked, selected.
  2. Locked, unselected.
  3. Unlocked, selected.
  4. Unlocked, unselected.

Other Elements

GrowHome BestiarySelectedBackground.png

BeastiarySelectedBackground.dds is a not-quite-white texture intended for use with the previous icons.

GrowHome BestiaryUnlockedOverlay.png

BestiaryUnlockedOverlay.dds is a simple gradient with a similar purpose to the above.

Input UI

resources.assets and sharedassets0.assets contain a variety of scrapped Xbox and PC UI rendered in a similar fashion to the game's artstyle. Control inputs in-game are presented between brackets through the block.ttf typeface.

Also present is a full render of an Xbox 360 controller in 1080p.

Unused Music

Two unused music cues can be found alongside the litany of discarded sound effects. Leftover metadata reveals that both files were last edited on March 17, 2014 using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 for Windows.

Unused Sounds

A sizable amount of placeholder sound effects can be found, most of which match the animals outlined in the Beastiary section.

Animals

Audio Filename Notes
Temp_Bull01.ogg A collection of bovine sounds of varying quality, which are paired with louder duplicates in WAV format.
These were probably meant to be uttered by the Torro creatures in the final game, whose appearance is not dissimilar to a bull's.
Temp_Bull02.ogg
Temp_Bull03.ogg
Temp_Bull04.ogg
Temp_Bull05.ogg
Temp_Bull06.ogg
Temp_Bull07.ogg
Temp_DiplodocusCall01.ogg Growling sounds intended for the Diplodocus creature.
Temp_DiplodocusCall02.ogg
Temp_DodoCall01.ogg A set of calls probably once used by the Warble creature.
Temp_DodoCall02.ogg
Temp_DodoHappy.ogg
Temp_mammoth01.ogg Another scrapped beast, again with audio ripped from several different sources.
Temp_mammoth02.ogg
Temp_mammoth03.ogg
Temp_mammoth04.ogg
Temp_mammoth05.ogg
Temp_SheepBaa1.ogg A set of generic sheeps baaing.
Temp_SheepBaa2.ogg
Temp_SheepBaa3.ogg
Temp_SheepBaa4.ogg
Temp_Snore01.ogg Snoring sounds likely meant for the bull creatures, as they can only be found asleep inside a blocked-off cave in the retail game.
Temp_Snore02.ogg
Temp_Snore03.ogg

B.U.D. Interactions

Audio Filename Notes
Temp_CrystalExtraction.ogg An assortment of tingly sound effects related to B.U.D.'s crystal collectathon subobjective.
In the final game, their presence is communicated through dynamic audio and only use a more "digitized" sound effect when collected.
Temp_CrystalRadarPing.ogg
Temp_EnterCrystalIntoTemple.ogg
Temp_JointedCrystal.ogg
Temp_ShardSubmission.ogg
Temp_ShardSuckSound.ogg
Temp_PodiumActivated.ogg Two sound effects tied to B.U.D.'s Tele-Router teleportation device, then referred to as a Podium.
Temp_PodiumComplete_Loop.ogg

Other

Audio Filename Notes
Test_LP.ogg beep. The metadata dates this file back to October 13, 2014 and informs that it was created with Sony's Sound Forge Pro 10.0.
Temp_TempleFinished.ogg Three odd sound effects related to a "Temple" of sorts, which imply that such structures could have been explored in previous builds.
Temp_TempleMouthOpen.ogg
Temp_DebrisDestroy.ogg

Debug Menu

Assembly-CSharp.dll contains two classes labeled DebugMenu and DebugMenuAttribute, the former of which indicates that one would have been toggled by pressing the ` (tilde) key.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Check if it's still there. It appears to be loaded by the Countly class in the default namespace.
  • Further investigate the file, specifically the Bestiary prefixed classes as well as OldGUIMenu in the default namespace.
