The Steam Machine is released to a lukewarm response. The Nintendo 3DS gets a juicy and somewhat word-salad-y upgrade, with some games being exclusively released for it and others having notable performance enhancements. Microsoft releases Windows 10, which is criticized at first due to compatibility issues with older games. Splatoon, Nintendo's take on the shooter genre, is released and quickly becomes an icon for the company. Nintendo also announces both their foray into the mobile market after lots of annoying shoulder-taps from investors, and their next console's codename, the Nintendo NX, just to ensure nobody thinks they're leaving the console market for good. Indie game Undertale is also released to critical claim and immense popularity.

Satoru Iwata, executive producer at Nintendo and known for saving video games like EarthBound and Pokémon Gold and Silver during development also unfortunately passes away in July. May he rest in peace.
