4K monitors and televisions start getting less expensive, which results in many people entering into the magical world of 4K. Eventually, movies and games would start to take advantage of it. A few unusual games such as Goat Simulator, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, and Five Nights at Freddy's come out in the year, all unexpectedly gaining viral popularity. Nintendo launches the first waves of their toys-to-life line, amiibo (all lowercase), to coincide with the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It leads to a sudden craze when certain amiibo figures turn out to be playing hard-to-get. The Yo-kai Watch series becomes a cultural icon in Japan, getting a localization in the following year.

Unfortunately, this is the year when Wi-Fi services for Nintendo DS/Wii games would be discontinued, thanks to the shutdown of GameSpy.
