1998 marks the release of Windows 98 (big shock, I know) and the Japanese release of the then-prolific Sega Dreamcast. The Game Boy finally gets an upgrade that's full of Color. As for actual games, this year saw the release of the critically-acclaimed Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Kazooie for the Nintendo 64, and Half-Life for Windows. Pokémon Red and Blue finally makes its western debut, kickstarting Pokémania in the next few months. The SNES and Genesis bid farewell to the North American market, ending their epic seven-year console war with a rather anticlimactic resolution.

No matter what system you owned, it was a big year.
