Nintendo's 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System finally hits American shores with the critically-acclaimed and fondly remembered Super Mario World right alongside it. Sega, whose own 16-bit Genesis/Mega Drive has been doing modestly, responds to the Super Mario mania with Sonic the Hedgehog, which is similarly praised. A bitter rivalry begins, while Capcom does their own thing with Street Fighter II in the arcades, which ends up overshadowing the rather obscure first outing by a longshot and essentially becomes the basis for the rest of the Street Fighter franchise. Oh, and the CD-i was inexplicably released near the end of the year.
