So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

Indie Game Battle was what you'd get if Super Smash Bros. was made up of several local indie game characters... and if Masahiro Sakurai used the "Early Access" moniker to take people's money. An unintentional time capsule of the indie game scene of the mid 2010's, Indie Game Battle is perhaps notable for being one of the few pieces of media that gave the then-obscure Pico of Newgrounds fame a spotlight, predating Friday Night Funkin' by five years and the subsequent revitalization of the character.

Future updates of the game were planned, but fell by the wayside as considerable internal politics and troubled development progressed. The game was cancelled, and IGB soon fell into obscurity. From what few sources remain due to link rot, Indie Game Battle had quite the storied history, although only one surviving account exists courtesy of Ryan Silberman - whose characters were originally going to appear in the game. At some point, all links to the game were taken down.

The only way to play IGB is through archive.org, thanks to the aforementioned Silberman keeping backups of the game and saving them for posterity.

Planned And Removed Characters
There's more unused characters than used ones!

Oddities
Because Pico fighting the Goat Simulator goat isn't odd enough.

Removed Stages

The following stages were once made available to select in earlier builds of the game.

ABSO Arena

Arena.png

Missileman's stage, appropriately based on his game, Missileman Origins. The stage features a floating bumper a la Peach's Castle from the original Super Smash Bros., and its layout is fairly close to its appearance in the title it's from.

Of the removed stages, this one had the longest lifespan: it made its debut when Indie Game Battle first went live (v1.0), and was eventually removed when Missileman was taken out of the character roster after v2.01.

Demon Fields

Also first appearing in v1.0, this stage is based on Super Anjelo Land 2: Anjelo's Own World. Back when that game was in development, Anjelo (renamed to Fil) was intended to be playable in the game at some point. Unfortunately, this fell through when Thunder was removed from Indie Game Battle after v1.44, and this stage went away with it.

Ruination Caverns

This stage is based on Dynamite Alex, a game by the creator of Missileman. It is a 2D stage using the tiles and music from the world of the same name.

It was added much later than the other stages here, having debuted at v1.53. Similarly to ABSO Arena, it was removed when Missileman was taken out of the character roster after v2.01.

Beyond Hell Valley

Associated with the character Thunder, this stage is based on his game (Storm and Sword) and was added to Indie Game Battle on v1.14. It bears many similarities to Kid Icarus. The stage is in 2D, with tiles taken from the inspiration. There are two teleporters opposite from each other.

The stage was removed when Thunder was taken out of the character roster after v1.44.

Water Temple (old)

v1.0 v1.49 v1.80
It's dark in here. Looong loooong STAAAAAGEEE!!! Now it's not even the same stage anymore.

Water Temple is a stage based on Guppy's Quest. While the stage itself was never removed from Indie Game Battle, it did undergo two redesigns:

  • When the stage made its debut in v1.0, it consisted of three ground platforms, two of which would veer off into the death boundaries. The middle is separated by two gaps. The decor is relatively simple, with a mirror serving as the centerpiece.
  • From v1.49 to v1.79, the stage was redesigned in 2D, with more background objects and longer stretches of land.
  • In v1.80, Water Temple got a complete overhaul. This version stuck until the end of Indie Game Battle's lifespan.

Unseen Weapon Location Indicator

Hmmm...
To do:
Add the rest of the characters.

Unseen Weapon Locator.png

An untextured piece of geometry that characters with weapons have to indicate where to place their weapon.
