Mario Kart: Double Dash!!/Disabled Objects

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.

In-game objects have a few different states that keeps track in what game modes an object should be present on the course. These three states are as follows:

  • Only spawn during singleplayer races (0x01).
  • Only spawn during multiplayer races (0x02).
  • Spawn during singleplayer and multiplayer races (0x03).

However, there are some objects that are set to 0x00. These objects are completely disabled, and are never loaded during gameplay despite having an object entry in its files with configurations set. Some of these objects are even unused acorss the entire game. (Statistics are pulled from the latest release of MKDD Track Editor.)

Luigi Circuit

Chain Chomps

Three disabled Chain Chomps (TMapObjWanwan) are present at various places on the track - one placed near the first curve and two near the finish line, with one of them being placed right on the track. They're quite smaller, with the Chain Chomp near the curve being close in size to the Chain Chomp item. Why they're placed in such unusual spots isn't known.

Butterfly Generator

One of the butterfly generators (TSMAButterflyGen) in the 50cc version of the track is disabled. It's on the middle of the road and has an unused route ID attached (0x04).

Peach Beach

Pianta Gibberish

One of the Piranta objects near the finish line is completely mute, but does have an accompanying sound object (GeoSoundGen), which appears to have been disabled by accident. When enabled, a sound with an otherwise unused ID is played (0x01), which plays an assortment of Pianta gibberish.

Cataquacks

Three Cataquacks (TMapObjPoihana) can be found across the beach section of the course, each with their own settings. What's strange is that all three of them have their collision disabled, so they're completely harmless.

The first Cataquack is found near the beginning of the beach section, colored green (0x03) with a unique route ID (0x0A). Strangely, this is the only Cataquack to appear in the scrapped Robbery Battle Mode (with its value set to 0x02), though this might've been done by mistake.

The second Cataquack is found closer to the rocks, colored purple (0x02) with a unique route ID (0x0C).

The third Cataquack is found near the final road to the finish line, colored blue (0x00) with a unique route ID (0x03). This Cataquack appeared during Nintendo's E3 2003 presentation reel, though now with a green texture applied.

Peach Trees

Three Peach trees (TMapObjPeachTree) are present among one of the Mario Kart signs near the finish line. When enabling all three objects, the same trees across the course will become visible, though what's strange is that these are the only trees that have their collision disabled, despite these trees specifically being inaccessible to the player. Some of these trees can be barely seen in some of the prerelease B-Roll footage shown around E3.

Dry Dry Desert

In the track's files is an otherwise unused object for a hot air balloon (TMapObjDeBalloon). Placements for these objects exist near the same road where the finish line is. When enabled, the hot air balloon will move up and down without stopping. Two colored variants are present; a blue-red variant (0x01) and a purple-green variant (0x00). An early version of the balloons can be seen in prerelease screenshots from August 2003, though the models and position do not match what's found in the final game.

Rolling Item Blocks

Four disabled item blocks (TMapObjMoveItemBoxLimit) exist near the entrance of the cruise's interior. When enabled, these single item blocks start rolling from left to right, just like any other rolling object on the ship.

Out Of Bounds Table

A sliding table (TMapObjRollTable) can strangely enough be found out of bounds with its own unused route ID (0x18). It can be enabled and works as intended, but it can't be seen or interacted with anyway.

Fire Bar

A fire bar (TMapObjFireBar) can be found on around the same coordinates as the ship's ventilation. The fire bar holds 9 fireballs. Judging from its placement, it appears the object was only intended as a placeholder for the fan, as the fire bar object otherwise goes unused on this course.

Waluigi Stadium

Three fire rings (TMapFireCircle) and three fire bars (TMapObjFireBar) can be found on the same Z coordinates for each of their used variants, meaning they overlap when enabled, unless their used variants are disabled. These six disabled objects are interesting, as they're leftovers from early versions of these obstacles with a different amount of fireballs.

The fire rings have 7 fireballs for its unused variant instead of 8, and the fire bars have 4 fireballs for its unused variant instead of 3. Because of the extra space needed for the fourth fireball, the fire bars are raised 329,3 bits higher in its Y coordinates. These early fire bars can be seen in some prerelease b-roll footage from before E3.

Mushroom City

Item Generators

Two unused item generators (GeoItemGen) can be found near the beginning of the course when driving forward. These objects would've resembled a pipe (built onto the course's model itself) and spawn items when the player drives within a set certain distance of the object. When enabled, random items such as Mushrooms, Banana's, Stars and Bob-ombs will be dropped right onto the road. Both item generators are identical, with the only difference being that the second item generator has a lower throw strength. The object can be seen in the E3 demo.

Some unused settings are present too, such as having only one of the four aforementioned items spawn or nothing at all. Only the randomized setting is used. There's also five different directions items can be thrown at. The game only throws in the direction the item generator is placed in, but there's also settings to be thrown in reverse, in the player's direction, in a completely randomized 360 angle or in an alternate variant of the first option.

Floating Item Block

A floating item box (GeoItemCar) can be found on the left near one of the sections of the course covered by the giant bridge. When enabled, it functions like any other floating item box, following one of the few generic route IDs (0x04) set by other objects, and has a speed of 40.

Sherbet Land

Two objects that are related to each other can be found near the beginning of the course, that being an item block (GeoItemBox) and a skating Shy Guy (TMapObjHeyho) with its own unused route ID (0x15). When both objects are enabled, the also otherwise unused green Shy Guy texture (0x02) is used. The purpose of this green variant was to skate back and forth while jumping over the double item block to guard it. This was intended as an extra bonus for those who want to get an advantage with items, much like the green pipe in Mushroom Bridge. The green Shy Guy would be reused for the crowd in Waluigi Stadium as 2D graphic.

DK Mountain

Rock Generators

Each of the rock generator sections (TMapObjDonkyRockGen) has at least one disabled rock generator among three of the enabled generators.

The first rock generator can be found near the end of the mountain. When enabled, a small rock will spawn every 300 frames with a speed of 27 and an angle of 45, while following an unused route ID (0x0A).

The second rock generator can be found near the first bit of the grass sections. When enabled, a medium sized rock will spawn every 450 frames with a speed of 40 and an angle of 60, while following an unused route ID (0x06).

The third and final rock generator can be found near the cliff. When enabled, a small rock will spawn every 350 frames with a speed of 35 and an angle of 75, while following its unused route ID (0x0D).

Waluigi Stadium wasn't the only track intended to have a monitor displaying the player's view (GeoVision). This track has one too, located near the finish line, below one of the Wario Kart signs. It works as intended, though its placement is odd, suggesting the course model was never built to hold this monitor in the first place.

Fire Bar

A fire bar (TMapObjFireBar) can be found in the colosseum in the middle of the giant hole, an object that otherwise goes unused in this course. When enabled, a flat fire bar will become visible, unlike one seen anywhere in the game. This gives the player a small chance they'll get hit by any of the fireballs, if they were to fall into the pit. The fire bar holds up to 12 fireballs.

Fire Ring

A fire ring (TMapObjFireCircle) can be found near the end of the course when making the final jump before reaching the finish line. When enabled, the fire ring works as intended, holding 7 fireballs in total.

Starting Line

For some reason, the course's starting line object (GeoStartLine) isn't only disabled, but also placed out of bounds. Enabling it doesn't seem to do anything.

  • Position (X, Z, Y): -24387.0, 25959.0, -12414.0
  • Scale (X, Z, Y): 1.0, 1.0, 1.0

  • Collision: Disabled

Bowser's Castle

A disabled Twomp (TMapObjDossun) can be found in between two other Twomps near the beginning of the course. It's otherwise an identical copy to the Twomp that follows this one up, as they both have the same amount of cycle frames.

Award Ceremony

Peach Tree

A leftover tree (TMapObjPeachTree2) can be found on the right near the finish line, a place on the course where other trees are present on the Peach Beach course, but most of them have been deleted. When enabled, only a small portion of the tree can be seen during normal gameplay when the camera zooms out.

  • Left direction (X, Z, Y): 0.0, 0.0, -1.0
  • Collision: Enabled

Bird Manager

A bird manager of sorts (TSMABoidBirdManager) can be found near the back of the course. Enabling it doesn't seem to spawn the 6 birds that are set within its configuration, although the object does have its own unused route ID (0x0B) that isn't present on Peach Beach.

  • Position (X, Z, Y): -469.7, 1170.0, -20921.301
  • Scale (X, Z, Y): 0.699, 0.699, 0.699

  • Number of birds: 6

Pipe Plaza

Unlike all other disabled objects mentioned on this page, these are set to appear during singleplayer and multiplayer races (0x03). However, these objects are disabled in every Battle Mode scenario (0x00). Since this is a Battle Mode map, these objects are never activated.

Four item blocks (GeoItemBox) are found under the bridges. When enabled, the object has the ability to become either a single or double item block, and behaves like any other item block.
