SOMETIMES I SEE A TEXT BOX AND I JUST CAN'T HELP MYSSDFGFFDHFGDJGGFSHGDFH
This page sucks.
If you could make it suck less, that would be awesome.
Specifically:
  • Needs proper formatting;
  • The location folder of the files where the unused content came from;
  • Visuals for the sections that only feature text.
Hmmm...
To do:
  • The game has a lot of sequences where things are shrouded by darkness, such as the giant horse sequence. Add an "Unseen Details" section to display such models.
  • List all the key differences between the demo and final release.

Mouthwashing is a first-person horror game following the dying crew of a shipwrecked space freighter. Who could have known what Captain Curly was capable of? Guess he thought his crew dying alongside him was only right... but some men can't even kill themselves properly.

Developer Mode

The Developer Mode can be accessed by pressing L3 + R3 on a controller at any point in the game. Using the developer menu, you can enable noclipping, skip dialogue, or skip the current chapter entirely. Opening the developer mode on the main menu allows you to start the game from any chapter you want.

Unused Animations

In the Scene Explorer tool, there is a folder containing a animation of post-accident Curly giving Anya a lap dance.[3]

Unused Areas

Early Main Menu

Positioned just out of bounds directly below the retail menu environment is a gray box blockout of an early main menu design, which originally featured TV screens and monitors; just like the ones seen during the nightmare hallucination sequence near the end of the game.

In an interview for Boundary Break, gameplay designer Jeffrey Tomec explains that the team initially planned a diagenetic menu system with vertical screens and medical equipment. However, the idea was scrapped due to technical limitations, including the game's low resolution, which made text hard to read.

Developer Commentary TF2 InfoSpeech.png Transcript:
"Yeah, so we used to have this whole, like, diagenic menu concept for the game, where — Curly's whole setup with all the screens and stuff, would be — laid vertically, so we'd have like — y'know, all the medical equipment stacked, you'd have like on — attached to — like — the [unintelligible], and the little card, and all that stuff. So that was gonna be a big stack, it was gonna have this set of four screens they would have different menu buttons on them, and If you selected any of those things, the camera would zoom-in to that, and show like — the more specific options, like y'know, it would zoom-in into the options menu screen and then the actual menu would appear inside that. Uh, the reason we cut it, was both just like — scope, like, it was just complicated, but also — the uh — we were running the game at 640p, which is actually pretty low — resolution wise, and text that appears on 3D space can become very hard to read very quickly, so mapping something diagenicly like that ends up being a big problem."

Unseen Details

Hidden Portrait

A portrait can be found out-of-bounds near the infirmary, depicting the grub character from How Fish Is Made, Wrong Organ's previous game. The grub is wearing a top hat and holding a cotton swab, though the hat is barely visible against the dark background. This image is taken from a GIF used in the Steam page description, where the grub is seen dancing.

Cockpit Monitor

Besides the pixelated processing filter, the screens in the cockpit use a wobble filter that distorts everything shown in the monitors, rendering the display illegible through normal means. The text reads:

NOW LET'S WRITE SOMETHING IMPORTANT

Have you ever considered how useful umbrellas are?
They're fashionable, protect you from rain, and can be pretty cute too.
I wish I knew who invented them.
Do you think they're famous? I could look it up, but I won't. You do it, if you want.

IF YOU HAVEN'T REALIZED BY NOW, THIS TEXT IS USELESS GARBAGE THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING.
It's not meant to be read. Just filler text. But that won't stop me from wishing you a good day! On the off-chance you're even actually able to read this, I wish you good things. I hope you're doing well! Whether your day is ending or just beginning, I hope it is good.

Enough of the sappy stuff. I'm just writing until the screen is full.
I should've done the Lorem Ipsum thing, and I'm starting to regret that I didn't.
Is it too late to start now?

Swansea's Notes

Swansea's sticky notes in the Utility room and in Jimmy's hallucination are also legible.

Daisuke's Coffin

Daisuke's corpse can be found inside every casket found in the circle of headstones. Which is somewhat odd considering that the player can never catch a good look at it, and given that the coffin is sealed and can't be interacted with, there's no way to see it during normal gameplay.

Daisuke Venting

Daisuke entering the utility vent seen from a different angle.

Jimmy Bites The Curb

Seeing the ending scene from another perspective reveals that, unfortunately, developer Wrong Organ did not animate Jimmy's game-over sequence; whereas Daisuke's death is fully animated despite occurring partially off-screen.

Unused Graphics

Test Poster

A placeholder image for the posters seen around the Tulpar. It has the word "TEST" written in different sizes and a hand-drawn smiley face. It was likely used to test the introduction hallucination sequence, which is where they're more prominent.

Temp Mouthwashing Commercial

The Videoclips folder contains a temporary video for the Dragonbreath mouthwashing ad, which uses the Dancing Triangle meme [4]; specifically this version where the triangle makes eye contact accompanied by eerie music, instead of dancing to Missy Eliott's song "Lose Control".

Don'tOpenThis.png

A screenshot of Daisuke's model with deformed proportions. A tweet by one of the game's developers refers to it as "gnomesuke".
