Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill/Unused Audio
This is a sub-page of Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill.
As you can tell, there's quite a bit of unused audio in this game.
Contents
Credits Rap
Although the song can be heard in a couple of places (Perc2int.his being used on the options menu to test volume, and Inrto.his being used during the credit roll), the full version of this rap, found on the first disc, goes unused.
Credtrap.his
The name is certainly an abbreviation of "credits rap". It's unknown why Inrto was preferred over Credtrap.
Silly Intro Audio
All of these following unused pieces of audio come from an apparently unused scene (S61, available from within CifTree.dat), summarized as "Silly Intro Sequence".
44mag.his | The sound of a gun firing, presumably a 44 Magnum. | |
---|---|---|
Chikdeth.his | The sound of a chicken being run over by a car. | |
Inout.his | An outtro consisting of kids telling you to play Secrets Can Kill today. | |
amp.his | Someone saying "Look, it's Carol Burnett!" This doesn't seem to refer to anyone in particular. | |
ewwww.his | A kid saying "ewwww!" | |
ihad.his | A detective saying "Don't step on that evidence!" | |
what.his | A woman exclaiming "Busted!" |
Unused Music
Drybone.his | ||
---|---|---|
Song28.his | Interestingly, this his file misidentifies its audio data as compressed in Microsoft ADPCM format, when in reality it's plain, uncompressed data. It also doesn't double the samplerate number like other stereo tracks. |
The reason for these files going unused is unclear, as the game has a jukebox that could easily take a couple more songs.
Unused Speech
Disc 1
end3.his | |
---|---|
end4.his | |
end5.his | |
end6.his |
These are unused versions of end7.his, end8.his, end1.his, and end2.his, respectively.

D87.his | I care about you Nancy, and wish you weren't involved in this mess. But if you insist, I'll help you catch Mitch | |
The exact same audio as the used file, D67.his, though for some reason the associated talk animation is D87.avf, and there is no D67.avf. | ||
DIC6a.his | Hal, Hulk, and Connie were all involved with Jake in some way. He had information that could seriously jeopardize Hal's academic career. Connie once dated Jake, but now claims she despises him. There may be some connection between Jake's interest in judo and Connie's involvement with the Crane School of Defense. And Hulk seems awfully touchy about that break-in at the drug depot. | |
The used version is DIC6.his, and appears to be a cut-down version of this audio. The bold parts of the quote above are what remains in DIC6.his. | ||
NB01.his | That's too hot! | |
A slightly different (and used) version of Nancy saying this is in NB02.his. | ||
ND72a.his | Did Mitch kill Jake? | |
A more sure version of this, "Mitch killed Jake, didn't he?" appears in ND72az.his. | ||
nd18.his | Yeah, just sneeze and it'll swim away. Seriously, the manatees are a great team at a great school. Everyone is cool, except for a few punks like Jake Rogers. | |
This is identical to HD18.his on disc 2, except this is for some reason on disc 1 and mislabeled ("nd" means "Nancy (talking to) Daryl", while "hd" refers to Hulk Sanchez). |
Disc 2

Notes | ||
Cic8old.his | Oh, Jake had something on you, didn't he? | |
As the name of the file might suggest, there's a CIC8.his on disc, though it's radically different from this one: "I know you're the unknown winner of that judo competition. Jake Rogers had it all on videotape." | ||
HB01a.his | She just loves to hide things! | |
The second half to HB01.his, "Oh, I'm sure your aunt Eloise will be helpful.", both of which are cut directly from the complete version at HB03.his. This is a hint from Bess Marvin at different difficulty levels; HB03 is for the easiest difficulty level, while HB01 is for the medium difficulty level, leaving out the mention of how Eloise has hidden things throughout the house. (An entirely separate recording exists for the hardest difficulty's hint.) Thus HB01a goes unused. | ||
HD20a.his | Hulk, is there anything you fear? | |
The used version is the more correctly named nhd20a.his, and identical to this one. | ||
HG23.his | You're on your own! | |
George telling Nancy how she doesn't have a hint to give. The actual audio used for this response is HG18.his, and is more verbose: "I'm stumped, Nancy. I'm afraid I'm not very much help." | ||
HN22.his | I think the levers might control the boiler. | |
An unused hint from Ned about the boiler room puzzle. Ned's actual hints are more descriptive and less bleedingly obvious. | ||
NC23a.his | What kind of guy was Jake? | |
NC43a.his | Is there a connection between the Judo tournament and the fact Jake was blackmailing you? | |
NC43bz.his | You hated Jake enough to kill him, didn't you? | |
The used version of this, NC43b.his, is less accusatory than this version: "Could you have hated Jake enough to kill him?" | ||
NDRUG1.his | Hm. According to that magazine article in the library, Dianabol is a steroid! | |
The used version, NDRUG2.his, simply mentions what Dianabol is, and also notes that it was one of the drugs taken from the pharmacy. Considering NDRUG2 plays while looking at the magazine itself, NDRUG1 wouldn't really fit here. | ||
NHD26A.his | Do you have any enemies? | |
A slightly different version is used, and is in NH26a.his (mislabeled as Nancy talking to Hal, instead of talking to Hulk). | ||
NHD51ba.his | Did you kill Jake? | |
The used version replaces "Jake" with "him", and is in NHD51b.his. | ||
NINV1.his | How can I make this work? | |
NINV2.his | I need something to make this work. | |
Both of these are replaced by the more general Icant.his (which, unlike NINV1 and NINV2, appears on both discs). Icant and NINV2 are identical, however. |
Unused Sound Effects
Disc 1
Thunder3.his | The sound of thunder, as you might expect. | |
---|---|---|
cash3.his | A cash register printing out a receipt or the like. Most likely use would have been for the printer in the teacher's lounge, though the sound of an actual printer is used instead (found in lpr01.his). | |
chain01.his | An unused chain rattle. | |
chain02.his | A slower version of chain01.his. Both of these could have been used for the chained levers in the boiler room puzzle, though only chain03.his is actually used. | |
crowd1.his | Ambient noise of a crowd of people talking. Would have helped make the school seem like it contained more than 3 students, like the ambient basketball noise near the gym. | |
elevsbat1.his | Sound of an elevator closing and going to the desired floor. The used version of this, elevsbat.his, is much shorter, lining up better with the short travel time of the maintenance elevator. | |
lever01.his | Could have been used for the boiler room levers, but for whatever reason isn't. (lever02.his and lever03.his are instead used for the levers). | |
teldown.his | The sound of a telephone being placed back on its hook. Appears on both discs. | |
ventmve.his | The sound of Nancy crawling through the vents to get out of the boiler room. vent01.his is instead used for this. |
Disc 2
doorjig.his | An unused sound of someone trying to open a door. Likely disappeared in favor of Nancy saying "I need something to make this work!". | |
---|---|---|
lckrlckd.his | Similar to doorjig, except the sound of trying to open a locker. In game, the only locker you can try will take you to its padlock when you try to open it, negating the need for this sound. |
