OMORI/Unused Graphics
| To do: Plenty. |
Characters
Placeholder Portrait
An early drawing of a SPIDER CAT, stored in the game's directory for character portraits as "00_BLANK."
SUNNY
SUNNY has a single unused portrait stored in MARI's spritesheet. It appears to be a lighter version of SUNNY, and it doesn't have much of a resemblance to any of SUNNY'S battle portraits. Notably, this portrait is called in a commented-out cutscene meant for the Good Ending.
MARI
MARI has a full set of unused portraits for her appearance in the sequence before entering DEEP WELL for the first time. In-game, this spirit-like MARI only has one line of dialogue, and the portrait used has black eyes with white pupils.
BASIL
Portraits of FARAWAY BASIL looking especially angry can be found amongst his other portraits, both with and without his flower. Even during his most emotional moments, these portraits are never used.
DREAM WORLD Demo Tags
First known versions of all the images that appear when the player tags a character in the DREAM WORLD, leftover from the game's demo.
DREAM WORLD Early Tags
More tag images, this time closer to the final versions. The major differences include most of the drawings having additional details such as more detailed shading seen than in the final game. The colored backgrounds corresponding to each character also return from the demo's tags. Curiously, the "HERO TAGGED KEL" tag image in the final game used this revision (minus the background) up until version 1.0.4.
FARAWAY TOWN Early Tags
Early versions of the final FARAWAY TOWN tag images. Most of these were either redrawn or given additional detail for the final. The colored backgrounds make an appearance once again.
FARAWAY TOWN Emotions
In the FARAWAY TOWN segments of the game, the emotion mechanic is scarcely used. Nonetheless, unique sprites exist for all applicable party members. SUNNY and KEL can sometimes get SAD and ANGRY while in some battles, however.
KEL
AUBREY
HERO
Enemies
FEAR OF DARK
An early version of the SOMETHING IN THE DARK boss, which can be seen in the game's 2017 trailer (which is notably sped up). All code for the boss was removed from the game at some point, though the graphics still remain.
FEAR OF WATER
An early version of the SOMETHING IN THE WATER boss, which was redrawn and given color and additional frames in the final game. Once again, the sprites of this boss are all that remain of it.
SPIDER CAT
Sprites used for the unused SPIDER CAT enemy, meant to be present in PYREFLY FOREST.
BABY SPIDER
Sprites used for the unused BABY SPIDER enemy, meant to be present in battles against SOMETHING IN THE WALLS.
STRAY DOG
A rather vicious looking STRAY DOG that. Meant to be used with the STRAY DOG enemy. Seems to have had its entire spritesheet made grayscale. However, its original palette can still be viewed in its "enemies" folder sprite.
CROW
Meant to be used with the CROW enemy. Similar to the STRAY DOG, all of its spritesheet has been made grayscale. Likewise, its original palette can be seen in the "enemies" folder sprite.
FARAWAY TOWN Emotions
Similarly to most party members, it's impossible to make enemies in FARAWAY TOWN feel emotions. Unique sprites exist, regardless.
BEE
HOUSEFLY
JACKSON
AUBREY
ANGEL
CHARLIE
THE MAVERICK
KIM
VANCE
HOOLIGANS
RECYCULTIST
RECYCLEPATH
Placeholder Images
Many placeholder or mockup images were left in the game, with some of them including some prerelease material.
Final Battle
A few placeholder assets exist for the final battle against OMORI.
UI Mockup
A mockup image of the final battle against OMORI. It uses the Battle UI from the Kickstarter demo, as evidenced by the orange JUICE meter. There's a blur effect around the image, and OMORI and SUNNY's drawings are badly cropped. Lastly, SUNNY'S name is simply "____" as a placeholder.
Early Intro
A work-in-progress spritesheet of the intro for the final battle. Frame numberings can be found at the bottom right.
HANGMAN
There exists two placeholder images for the HANGMAN screen. Instead of using keyboard keys for the letters, these images use Blackletters. These were actually teased in a 2019 Twitter post by the official OMORI Twitter account.
PHOTO ALBUM
An earlier version of the PHOTO ALBUM, which contains early text and pictures taken by BASIL. Behind the album is a strange room with some debug text and PLUTO, of all things.
World Map
An earlier version of the world map, which is almost identical to the final map, but contains a dock maze at the top of the sea and some shading differences for objects in the sea.
SOMETHING IN THE WALLS
Two unused sprites for the SOMETHING IN THE WALLS creature that SUNNY encounters. Of note is that its limbs end with what appear to be hands, while normally they're just regular spider limbs.
Stargazing
A placeholder parallax graphic for the scene where OMORI gazes at the stars in the playground.
Battle Background Guideline
A unique battle background used as a guideline, presumably for enemy placement.
Atlases
Big spritesheets used during development for various purposes.
Development Related Images
There are two images that depict some templates the developers of the game used for various actions and features. The first image contains an NPC representation of OMOCAT, an NPC representation of Archeia (one of the co-developers for OMORI), and what appears to be a DREAM WORLD version of SUNNY with a flower crown.
Title Screen Atlas
An early title screen atlas, featuring a few differences for each row of characters:
- OMORI is slightly larger than the final, and has a small white fade near the bottom of his sprite.
- BLACK SPACE OMORI is much darker, and has dimmer highlights.
- SUNNY's face, as well as his second and third frames, were adjusted in the final seemingly to separate him from OMORI.
Battle Atlases
Essentially spritesheets containing most of the battle UI. Two early versions of this atlas exist in the files. Of note is that both of these earlier versions have the final ECG say "everything will be okay" instead of "everything is going to be okay".
battleATLAS_NEW
Despite the name "battleATLAS_NEW", this is the earliest battle UI atlas in the files. The main differences include:
- All of the UI is much thicker.
- There are placeholder "FIGHT..." and "RUN!" buttons.
- The energy meter uses a slightly different palette than the final.
- The stress meter has a different visual appearance during its later stages.
- Some of the attack commands are off-center.
battleATLAS
Most of what's here is pretty much final, but there's some minor differences:
- Both the energy and stress meters seem to have their first stages completely missing.
- The energy meter charge-up graphic has a transparent outline not present in any other revision.
