This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

During its time on the Dreamcast, Phantasy Star Online would see a second revision a few months after its initial release as Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2. This revision fixes various bugs, introduces various new quality of life features as well as introduces two new areas.

Ver. 2 would be the basis of a PC version of the game released exclusively in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. Despite being based on Ver. 2, this PC port goes simply by the name Phantasy Star Online (though the port is dubbed PSOPC within the community).

This section will go over the differences between the original game (referred to as "Ver. 1" from here on out, Ver. 2 and the PC port.

Menu Differences

During the Sonic Team logo, the text 'IN COOPERATION WITH' was changed to 'CREATED BY'.

Title Screen

Ver. 2, adds the "Ver. 2" subtitle to the logo and updates the copyright to also have the year 2001. The PC version keeps the updated copyright information but lacks the "Ver. 2" subtitle, in addition to replacing the "PRESS START BUTTON" graphic with "PRESS ENTER KEY".

The PC version replaces the option to go to the game's website with "EXIT".

Ver. 1 / Ver. 2 PC

The PC version adds Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional and Korean language options, as this port was only available in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. In addition, all the language names in these options are followed by the language name as written in said language.

The character selection screen was changed in the PC version to reflect the way save data is handled. On the Dreamcast version, each memory card could hold only a single character. No such limitations exist on PC, so instead the menu asks the player to select a "Hunters File" and lets you have 100 characters total.

Graphical Differences

  • In versions after Ver. 1, draw distance for blood and item drops was lowered.
  • In versions after Ver. 1, red circle sparkles from shifta/jellen and blue circle sparkles from deband/zalure were removed.
  • In Ver. 2, quest timers' boxes were made smaller.

Other Differences

PSOPC Launcher.png
  • The PC version uses a game launcher from which players can launch the game as either an Online or Offline game. As a result, upon selecting a character the game goes straight to the game.
  • Unlike the Dreamcast version which had any updates happen server-side, the PC version could receive patch updates via the launcher.
  • Ver. 1's level is set to 100. Ver. 2 onwards have the level set to 200.
  • Ver. 2 adds the "Ultimate" difficulty. This difficulty changes the appearance of the game's environments and swaps out enemies and bosses with harder variations.
  • Ver. 2 made Poison Lilies and Nar Lilies taller.
  • Ver. 2 added the "Challenge Mode", "Battle Mode" and Lobbies 11-15 for online. Online Battle Mode was implemented in Ver. 1 but was locked behind a flag sent by the server, and it appears Sega never enabled this flag for Ver. 1.
  • Ver. 2 fixed some typos.
  • The PC version expanded the Word Select with rare items from Ver. 1 and Challenge and Battle categories, with some other options.
