Regional Differences

A game about slamming your beloved friends with rocks and rockets all while using psychic abilities to amp up the carnage. Poy Poy 2 truly has it all.

Unused Assets

The game contains several gloves that are not accessible during normal gameplay, but apart from having a psycho energy cost, they do not have any functionality tied to them. The left-out gloves have similar names to already existing gloves like Maracas and NOIZ most likely sharing an upgrade path or at least sharing a theme. Some of these gloves seem to be hastily translated as their names have clear typographical errors like DEEMON and DERKNESS.

Interestingly, the European release gave these gloves a unique orange color when they appear in the menus, unlike the Japanese release that just uses the same red color that can be seen when selecting hidden gloves.

Glove ID Glove Name
88 JAZZI
95 ZONBI
97 REDDRAGON
103 DERKNESS
106 BIG BAN
107 NOIZ
109 DEEMON

The gloves have the same IDs in both versions.

There is an audio file where the Glove Upgrader says the name of a glove called "The Peach" that does not exist in the game.

Debug Mode

The lines on the left represent current CPU load. Top most number "3030" shows which screen the game is currently in. The rest of the numbers represent plugged in controllers where each row describes a controller. Currently there are two digital controllers plugged in.

Entering the Konami Code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, X, O) in the "PRESS START" menu enables a debug mode. This mode enables several tools and features that can be used to test parts of the game, like giving the player 100 000 000 money, easy access to the Mystery Glove Salesman and the secret glove upgrader by making them much more likely to appear. The mode also enables UI that displays the current screen ID, all currently plugged in controllers and their status, CPU load, and in-game glove synchronization level. Trying to enter a cup event also displays a unique menu that lets the user to skip straight to the finals. While this mode has other passive effects like making the mystery salesman appear more often and the witch appearing in the break room each time the player visits there, there are other interesting activatable effects as well. Also, opening the glove menu with Start at the Poy Poy Cup lobby increases all owned gloves' usage count by two and refreshes money back to 100 000 000.

Activatable Effects During a Match

  • R2: Control the psycho synchronization of all characters in the match. Synchronization power ranges from 1-5, where 1 is the weakest. Interestingly, this can be done with any controller, even for players 5 - 8 when using two multitaps.
  • X + Square + Triangle + Circle: Can be used with the following buttons to instantly retire certain characters:
Combination Player 1 Player 2 Player 3 Player 4
R1 + L1 Retire everyone but P1 Retire everyone but P2 Retire everyone but P3 Retire everyone but P4
R2 + L2 Retire everyone but P4 Retire everyone but P4 Retire everyone but P4 Retire everyone but P4
R1 + L1 + R2 + L2 Enable VRAM mode Retire everyone Retire everyone Retire everyone but P4

Other Activatable Effects

  • R1 + L1 + R2 + L2: Display VRAM mode. Select exits this mode.
    • D-Pad: Move view around the VRAM space.
    • X: Move slower.
    • Square: Move a bit faster.
    • Circle: Move faster.
    • Triangle: Move a lot faster.
    • Start: Center view to currently rendered image.
    • Select: Exit VRAM mode.
Trying to enter the Poy Poy Cup while in debug mode shows the cup menu in Japanese with an additional "Finals" option that takes the player straight to the finals.

Find more activatable effects, if there are any.
