This page details prerelease information and/or media for Dead Rising (Xbox 360).

Dead Rising went through a ton of changes during development.

Development Timeline

Hmmm...
To do:
Proper Dates
  • 2004
    • Capcom begins development with their new MT Framework engine.
    • A tech demo is created and pitched to Microsoft which was perceived positively.
  • 2005
    • Capcom unveils the first trailer at E3 2005 with the working title "DEAD RISING".
    • Capcom has their first publicly playable build of Dead Rising for Tokyo Game Show 2005.
  • 2006
    • The game is shown off once again at E3 2006, this time it is much closer to the final game.
    • A preview build is created, it is basically the same as the final build but it has some glitches.
    • The game is released.

E3 2005

The earliest known build of the game, of course, it has the most changes.

  • Frank looks completely different, wearing a turtleneck and a black jacket. He is also voiced by a completely different, unknown actor instead of T.J Rotollo.
  • There is no icon when near an item.
  • The zombies look very early in development as the textures are very low quality and there are not many types of zombies.
  • Frank is seen helping a survivor who trips and falls, this survivor is actually in the files of the Pre-E3 build of the game.

Tokyo Game Show 2005

A much more refined version of the E3 build.

  • Frank's model is different but still the base design of E3.
  • The area where the build takes place is a completed version of North Plaza with different stores and fountain however this version of North Plaza was most likely made specifically for the demo as there is concept art of the incomplete version of North Plaza used in the final game.
  • The HUD is completely different, looking a lot redder with the inventory on the bottom right instead of the top right. These HUD icons can be found in the files of the Pre-E3 build of the game, there is also an unused version with blue health blocks instead of red.
  • Instead of a bar to represent the timer, it is just a normal timer.

Las Vegas/Pre-E3

A build exclusively for demo purposes, the game is closer to the final, but still very different.

  • The HUD is almost finalized, the health blocks are grey instead of yellow and the font is different.
  • Frank's design is basically the same as the final but he has different hair and still wearing his black jacket.
  • Weapons flash red when damaged instead of white unlike the final.
  • The zombies look much bloodier and ghoul-like than the final but there is less variety. In the retail build, the zombies are more bright and have more variety.

E3 2006

Basically the finished game but with some differences and bugs.

  • There is a debug function to quit to the title screen, most likely meant so the next person in the line could play.
  • The survivors in the Entrance Plaza have way more health.
  • The HUD and zombies are the same as the final build.
  • In the helicopter section, there is a PP sticker, this could be a glitch or intentional.
  • The frame-stop glitch when killing zombies doesn't happen for some reason.

Early Music

An early version of Adam's theme that was used on the title screen of the Las Vegas build. It is much more synthy and missing the lyrics of the final song.
