Prerelease information of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories were surprisingly very minimal, despite having a decent number of changes compared to the final.
The game received critical acclaim for being a first portable 3D Grand Theft Auto experience, eventually becoming the best selling PlayStation Portable game of all time with eight million copies.

2003
- circa. Summer - After being selected by Sony for a PlayStation Portable development kit, Rockstar begins work on a title for that system.[1]
2004
- Dec. 12 - The PlayStation Portable was first released in Japan.
2005
- Jan. 10 - A Grand Theft Auto PSP title is announced alongside Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition for the then-forthcoming PlayStation Portable. It was confirmed that the game would be set in Liberty City. [2]
- May 18-20 - Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories was shown off at E3 2005, with a release slated for September.
- May 29 - The date of the earliest leaked build.
- Sep. 9 - A trailer for Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was released.
- Oct. 25 - Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was released in North America for the PlayStation Portable.
- Nov. 4 - Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was released in Europe for the PlayStation Portable.
2005
January
On January 10, 2005, Rockstar confirmed that a Grand Theft Auto title was in development for the PlayStation Portable, which had not been released yet. At that time, Rockstar said the game would be set in Liberty City and was being developed by Rockstar Leeds, but further information was under wraps.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was unveiled, but little-to-no coverage was shown due to gameplay being behind closed doors.
