SIGGRAPH 2000
During the 27th Annual SIGGRAPH Convention on July 23th, 2000, Valve showed an engine test behind closed doors. to show off the capabilities of the (un-named at the time) Source Engine.
This demo comprises of 5 or so maps, including demo_arctic (previously believed to have been from 2001 because of the modification date despite extensive usage of Hyper era sounds), a map from the city_test series of maps involving the infamous "Free TV's" scene involving rioting Gasmask citizens rioting and throwing molotovs as an early Trenchcoat Metrocop wielding a nightstick gets in hand to hand combat with them, an early revision of a c17_ map including a Merkava MBT firing at cars, demonstrating the previously mentioned destruction physics that were already implemented around this time according to recounts of the demo, a character museum map showcasing a few models (including the early crab synth), which appears to be built off of a very early version of Kleiner's lab, and a developer map meant to showcase facial animations.
This footage was once considered to be lost to time, but has recently been recovered as a full 16 minute demo released by Valve alongside footage of the E3 2002 and 2003 demos to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2's release.
