Gamepro's Power Up Episode 5 (1993)

Pre-release footage from Gamepro Magazine. Footage starts at 7:52

What appears to be an early Stage Select and an unknown boss are shown at 8:20

Shoshinkai/Spaceworld '93

A pre-release trailer of Mega Man X was shown at Shoshinkai (later known as Spaceworld) in 1993. From this, we can say that this build was from before the 22nd August 1993, so around 4 months before the Japanese release on the 17th December that same year. Only 4 Stages are present in the pre-release trailer: The Highway/Opening Stage, Armored Armadillo's Stage, Launch Octopus' Stage and Sting Chameleon's Stage. Changes from the final version include:

General

  • The title screen logo has a ™ symbol instead of a ©.
  • X's life gauge has a "P" instead of a "X".
  • The 1-UP has the shape of X's helmet, lacking his face. A similar sprite would later be used in Mega Man X4.
  • Different explosion sprite.
  • X's charge shot uses the graphics from the partially charged shot, but colored red. He also appears to only have one charge shot instead of two.

Opening Stage and Armored Armadillo's Stage

  • Death Rogumer has a static propeller.
  • A Gunvolt appears in Armored Armadillo's Stage.

Sting Chameleon's Stage

  • The area that contains the Heart Tank in the final version is smaller and contains nothing, and it has more blocks in the entrance. When the blocks are broken by the Foot Parts, they simply vanish, lacking the debris animation. Also, the palette from the area is different.
  • The Heart Tank appears behind the Hogammer in the middle of the stage. There is also a second Hogammer protecting the 1-UP.
  • Before being destroyed with a charge shot, the graphics from the Hogammer's shield changed, taking a damaged appearance. This graphic is unused in the final version.
  • The Ride Armors in the stage are green (like Chill Penguin's stage) instead of red. The Amenhoppers also appear to have a different palette.

Launch Octopus' Stage

  • A jellyfish-like enemy appears in the beginning of the stage. It is still present in the final version's code.
  • The position of the shells in the ground are different.
  • Instead of spikes, the area with the Heart Tank has animated sea anemone-like graphics, and the ceiling from the area is different.

"SAMPLE" Version

The U.S. final with "Sample" added to the title screen.

EGM Preview

A preview from Electronic Gaming Monthly #049; the stage shown here (given the nickname of "White City") is unknown, but given the presence of Road Attackers, it's possibly a very early version of the intro stage; the old life-icon is also present.
