Scrapped Ideas
This Flow Chart was shown off in a interview, When asked about it in their Discord, ZUHN gave more insight into some of the differences, and cut content.
Ship Level: I can confirm that we had planned to have the ship flashback be before Octodad went to the aquarium. But mechanically it was too tricky to show up so early, and thematically it was way better suited to be after he ends up at his lowest point (stuck in the shark tank) "Chef Captured": originally Octodad was going to tie up the Chef after defeating him in the backyard, so that he wouldn't cause more trouble. But his family is watching so that's kinda conspicuous and then the Chef just attacks in the grocery story anyway, so we didn't go that direction. The Angler: At some point the Deep Dark Sea was going to end with Octodad having to disable a giant robot angler fish. We built a prototype of that level, but it was both really unbelievable and too combat-like imo. You can see a screenshot of it in this blog from way back https://younghorsesgames.com/six-ideas-rejected-from-octodad-dadliest-catch/ (and yes, we more or less reworked that into the snugglefish) Pumps Level: In this plan, as Octodad is trying to get to the top of the shark tank to see Scarlet, he would have to go through the pump room to get there. I think we decided it was too long and broke the flow too much, so you just...go up a set of stairs. Much easier! We had already built the pump level though and we liked the aesthetic so we actually expanded it and then made it a secret level.
Kevin Geisler also had some stuff to share, mostly about a cut segment in the "Stealth" level.
K: Parking lot was cut. There was a pitch by me at least to be a somber return to the aquarium by octodad at his lowest point Q: Like, him exiting, realizing he probably can't get back and just sombering back into the Aquarium in defeat? K: Well, him feeling found out, that his family may abandon him etc
According to Kevin, this part would have consisted of Octodad feeling his family abandoned him, and then sombered back into the Aquarium, before stumbling across his family locked up in the Cafe.
