Hmmm...
To do:
Add the concept art for the Poptropicans from there.
Hmmm...
To do:
Document the beta footage (video 1, video 2) recorded by Codien, an ex-author of the Poptropica Help Blog.

Some differences:

  • The logo in the top-left corner says "BETA" in small text.
  • The menu buttons all look similar to the "Save" button.
  • The "Save" button is more of a purple pastel color than it is the in final version.
  • The screen fades to blue when leaving a scene.
  • A loading wheel appears when the player gets an item.
  • The mouth for jumping/laughing doesn't show any teeth or a tongue. (Is there a tongue in the final version?) Also seen here.
  • Games and island items are all located in a single screen in the inventory menu.

Early Development

During somewhere in 2006, the developers came up an with idea and called it Poptropolis. Its name was changed because Jeff Kinney, the creator of Poptropica, said that it sounded too similar to a competitor, Nicktropolis (although its name is not mentioned in this official blog post). Instead, they came up with an idea of the separate island adventures by adding the "tropic" part of the name rather tan "tropolis".

The early name Poptropolis, on the other hand, was later reused for the name of Poptropolis Games Island.

Mockup Images

Apparently mockup images of the project used to be found in an official Poptropica Creators' Blog, but as of now, all instances of the images from the concept are replaced by a grayed-out warning sign, meaning that you can no longer see them from their website.
