This page details pre-release information and/or media for Sam & Max Hit the Road.

Development Timeline

  • October 30th 1992 - Sam & Max Game Flow Dated
  • November 11th 1992 - Design Document Dated
  • Mid 1993 - Sam & Max Demo was made
  • Late 1993 - Sam & Max final release

Documents

Two documents have been released, with one being a flow chart of the game from October 30th 1992 and a full design document from November 11th 1992. Both documents are available together on samandmax.co.uk

General differences between both documents

  • Conroy Bumpus' body guard Lee Harvey was originally going to be two characters named Lee and Harvey.
  • Mole men are referred to as "Mole Guy" or "Other Mole Guy"
  • Trixie was originally Burnese instead of from Scranton
  • Snuckey's is still Stuckey's

Games

The latest document mentions 3 games

  • High Way Surfing (In the final game on the map screen)
  • Sam & Max Dress Up Book (In the final game as an item purchasable at Snuckey's)
  • Sam & Max FlipBook (Not in the final game)
  • Maxisms (A take on Madlibstm, also not in the final game)

Room differences

Streets outside of Sam & Max's Office

City Folk were going to populate the street although this was not added

Kushman's Hall of Distasteful Oddities

Originally, Sam was going to get the matchbook for Gator Golf in a puddle left behind by Bruno instead of in Trixie's Trailer.

Tunnel of Love

  • The document proposes the idea of Sam & Max having to argue their way onto the ride.
  • The key that Doug gives you appears to not be a crowbar at this time
  • The document also mentions the possibility of their being a screen for exiting the Tunnel of Love.

Trixie's Trailer

Max could be shoved through a window, although this wasn't necessary for advancing the game (which was probably why it was removed).

World's Largest Ball of Twine

  • The guy working on the rotation system does not appear to be in this draft
  • The Sam & Max game flow document mentions that a gift shop would be here, however by the second later document this changed to a information center.
  • The game flow document also calls this place "Twine Peaks" or "The Biggest Ball of Twine in the Free World".

Frog Rock

It appears that Shevoul would tell you to go to Frog Rock instead of having to find it

Gatorgolf

It's seldomly referred to in the later document as "Aquagolf", with the earlier game flow document calling it the "Aquagolf Alligator Farm"

Bumpusville

  • Originally, Sam was going to use a bowling ball from Conroy's bedroom to trigger the alarm system instead of the cleaning robot.
  • Instead of Lee Harvey (or Lee or Harvey) guarding the VR system, a nameless goon would be guarding it instead. The document also mentions that goon would not disclose any information about the system to Sam & Max, while in the final Lee Harvey discusses the system.
  • Both Sam & Max were supposed to enter the VR world, but in the final only Sam enters
  • The game flow document also mentions Sam & Max flying around in the 3d world.
  • The song: King of the Creatures is not mentioned in these documents

Savage Jungle Inn

Sam & Max were originally going to offer the costume to Conroy instead of Sam Just taking it off and Conroy stealing it.

Mount Rushmore Dinosaur Tarpit and Bungee Jumping National Park

  • Max was going to be the one to bungee jump instead of the two.
  • Max would also have to choose the right head to bungee jump out of to get the tar and there would be a timing puzzle to go along side it.

Other notes

  • There was going to be a skeeball game that would have been playable near the end of the game (Potentially at the Savage Jungle Inn, or for the end credits)
  • There would have been a "cool cut scene of our heroes heading down the road"
  • Doug did not have a name in the game flow document with it saying: "He REALLY needs a name, dammit". This was finalized by the design document
