Prerelease Screenshots

These screenshots date back from sometime in 2004, one year before the game's release. It appears these were a part of some presskit, but not much else is known about their origin.

Prerelease Final
DS SPP PreRelease1.png

An early version of the start of the level Fury Volcano 1. There are many noteworthy differences to be found here. Most notable is that the gameplay seems to be taking place on the bottom screen, with Peach at the top. In the final game this is reversed. Princess Peach's emotion sprite looks very different, as does most of the UI. There are no vibe buttons present anywhere, but the vibe gauge is (albeit in a very primitive state), so the mechanic was probably already there. The gameplay sprite for Peach and Perry remained mostly the same, and the level layout also didn't see much changes. The mushrooms have been changed slightly, the rock platform on the far right is slightly different, and the Podoboo got placed in the right lava pool in the final game.

This screenshot appears to have been taken in the same level. It shows that the early vibe Peach at least had animation for here eyes and mouth. There's now also one heart present in the leftmost gauge. Other things of note are the early Peach and Perry sprites, the heart-shaped door, and the fact that there's now a Bob-omb shown.

Once again and apparent continuation. There are now two hearts in the gauge, but more notable is that there appear to be two Cheep-Cheep's lunging out of the forest ground.

The early map screen, once again featuring switched screens among many other changes. For example, Peach is shown to be in an early version of Gleam Glacier, which is World 6 in the final game, yet Peach appears to be on level 3-1. The Japanese text also translates to "Shriek Mansion", which actually is teh third world in the final game. It's possible that the textures just didn't match up yet. Despite apparently having collected all three Toads, there's no change in the level marker. The other levels are also already visible, something that only happens when clearing the prerequisite level in the final game. The art for the map is also very different. The Walruss and snowmen still appear in the final game's map, but there they are surrounded by a snowy landscape, not an ice/crystal cavern. Also, on the final map the Walruss is only visible from the second part of the map, not right from the start. The icons for the "menu" and "shop" are also very different. Perry's background remained the same, but in the final game he is only shown in a close-up.

Early Video Snippet

A snippet of some early gameplay dated to November 5, 2004. It's way too short to notice any substantial changes, but it's already far closer to the final game than the early screenshots were.
