PaRappa and PJ Stage

Ujl parappapjstage.jpg

This mysterious image was found in a Japanese UmJammer Lammy handbook.

  • One of Lammy's early designs can be seen in the top-left.
  • It looks like PJ and PaRappa are standing in front of some sort of brick wall or a city.
  • There are no lyrics.
  • The edges of the lyric box are cut off.
  • There is, presumably, some debug information above the lyric box.
  • PJ and PaRappa are holding t-shirts.
  • PaRappa looks as if he was fully animated.
  • The font for the Meter appears to be the same as in PaRappa The Rapper. However, it lacks the U rappin' ! seen in that game.

Rodney Greenblat commented on the image. "That must be a very rare picture of UJL in development. I’ve never seen it before, but it does look like one of my preliminary designs for Lammy on the wall in the background. The development team would do tests for animation and sometimes make backgrounds themselves. I didn't see many of those test. I don’t remember that one." Masaya Matsuura knew even less about the image.

1998 Trailer

A trailer for Um Jammer Lammy was released in 1998, and shows many differences in both cutscenes and gameplay.

-Animations in stages are mostly unfinished, with characters' faces mostly not moving and Lammy not moving as much when playing guitar.

  • 0:15 Lammy isn't holding her stomach while walking.
  • 0:17 Joe Chin lacks his cape.
  • 0:20 The layering on Lammy's hair is slightly different and Teriyaki Yoko's dress texture is glitched.
  • 0:22 The road texture is different.
  • 0:23 Lammy's expression is different.
  • 0:25 Chop Chop Master Onion's mouth isn't animated.
  • 0:45 There are no cars on the road.
  • 0:53 There is no background behind Lammy when she jumps through the poster.
  • 0:59 Katy Kat's bass looks different.
  • 1:04 Ma-San's drums are a lighter blue.
  • 1:25 Lammy and Katy's mouths are glitched.
  • 1:28 Lammy's animation when she wakes up is different.
  • 1:36 The electrocution animation doesn't flicker.
  • 1:41 Different animations for Lammy, Katy and Ma-San.
  • 1:47 Teriyaki Yoko's expression is different.
  • 1:48 Lammy's eyes are closed when she wakes up.

Differences from the August 1999 trailer

Another trailer for Um Jammer Lammy was shown during the August 26, 1999 promotional concert. It's mostly similar to the 1998 trailer with a few differences, despite being shown after the game had released in both Japan and America.

  • 1:00 Teriyaki Yoko jumps higher when the player loses.
  • 1:02 Though only seen for a few frames, it can be seen

that the subtitles "Uh huh, that's why we have to get going right now." can be seen, despite the fact that it's said earlier in the cutscene than shown. Similar instances of this can be seen at 1:07 and 1:09.

  • 1:30 For some reason, Lammy's mouth is missing, and her pupils

disappear for a frame. Formatting for exclamation points in the subtitles is also different.

  • 1:35 Lammy skids to a stop on the sidewalk instead of in the road,

and there's no car behind her as a result.

PlayStation Underground Interview

Present on disc one of Volume 3.3 of the PlayStation Underground Demo Disc is an interview with staff that worked on Um Jammer Lammy, with footage with a few differences compared to the final game.

-0:51 It appears that the transition between two ranks originally flashed yellow instead of white.
-1:09 Captain Fussenpepper's eyes were originally bloodshot instead of having red rings in them when he's in his "sergeant" state.
-1:16 On one of the developer's computer monitors, the title screen with the logo from the PlayStation Underground Jampack: Winter '99 demo can be seen.
-1:51 The player somehow gains 200 points while only using one input.
-2:46 An early version of the Stage 2 cutscene can be seen. The movement is slightly more fluid--likely due to being the raw video file rather than the compressed version used in the game--, Lammy's expression is slightly different before she skids to a stop, and the camera angle is slightly different when she does, as well as the position of some cars being different.
