Despite the game's development taking over 7 years, there were almost no major changes to the game during development since its inception - at least as far as the public knows. A good number of the changes were mainly internal and graphical upgrades, as the team improved over the years.

Development Timeline

2015

  • September - Undertale was released. After playing it, MasterSwordRemix, who would later be the director of Yellow, thought of the fangame and several ideas for it in one night, and hurried to find enough people that would help make the fangame a reality the next day.

2016

  • February 4th - Due to Undertale's fanbase being relatively new at the time, the recently formed Yellow team would write an email to Toby Fox asking for permission to make Undertale Yellow itself. Toby would reply with "do what thou wilt," essentially green-lighting development of the project for the team.
  • April 30th - A reveal trailer is uploaded for the game, showcasing The Dark Ruins.
  • November 30th - 7 months later, the demo of the game would be released, consisting of the first area in the game, the Dark Ruins.
  • December - The demo receives a few bug patches and fixes. The lead programmer at the time, Spasco, steps down from his position, and side programmer mysteryracer takes up the lead position. It is decided that the game would use mysteryracer's UTC Engine moving forward, as Spasco believed his own wasn't suited for the full game. This results in the development team remaking The Dark Ruins from scratch, before they move on to making the second area of the game.
  • December 25th - Martlet, one of the main characters in the full game, has her design revealed.

2018

  • February 18 - A teaser trailer for the second area in the game, Snowdin, is released. It shows some of the environment, a puzzle, a couple of monster encounters, and the shopkeeper of the area. At the end, there's a tease for what would be Kanako's mask in the final game.

2021

  • February 4th - Undertale Yellow's 5th anniversary. A teaser image was released, which shows vague silhouettes of most of the game's cast, not unlike Undertale‍ 's cast teaser image. It is also announced the third area is getting polished to be ready for closed beta testing.
  • June 29th - Five minutes of gameplay of a sub-area called The Mines was released. It was announced that the neutral route of the fourth area (Steamworks) is more or less complete, and the focus has shifted to endgame content.

2022

  • January 17th - An animated teaser is uploaded that reveals the third area in the game, The Dunes, and a Winter 2023 release window for the game.
  • April 10th - The Yellow team announces on Twitter that the main Neutral route is content complete.
  • June 20th - The Dunes is shown in more detail with a few screenshots of the area, a brief animation with Dunebud, the main song for the area, and a poster teaser image that has silhouettes of the Feisty Five and a reference to one of the main plot points of the story.
  • October 5th - The Yellow team announces on Twitter that the Pacifist route is content complete.

2023

  • March 5th - The Yellow team announces a delay for the game, as the ambition of their route and endgames has ballooned over the months, and development is slowed down to not be too strenuous on the developers. However, they assure that the game will be released at some point during 2023.
  • September 27th - The game officially goes gold and final beta testing commences. The soundtrack's length and track count are also revealed.
  • November 25th - The release date for the game, December 9th, 2023, is announced.
  • December 9th - The game is released.

Pre-Release

2016

April

A reveal trailer for the game was uploaded on April 30th, 2016, revealing The Dark Ruins and showing how the area looked at the time.

  • An earlier sprite design for Clover can be seen.
  • The Dark Ruins looks rougher and less polished overall, in comparison to its state in the Demo.
  • At 0:53, an early version of Snowdin can be seen. It mostly reuses the area's original tile set from Undertale, and contains a room design that doesn't exist in the final game.

2017

March

An unused track for the game called Drifting was uploaded on March 7th, 2017. It was originally going to be for a scrapped area in the game that was underwater-themed; the reasons for said area getting scrapped were quality-related.

2018

February

A trailer for the game's second area Snowdin was uploaded on February 18th, 2018 during the Atlantale convention, showcasing various rooms, puzzles, enemies, characters, and features. A lot of sprites were also touched up for the final game.

  • At 0:44, the campfire was originally just a log with a blue flame on it.
  • At 0:49, the mail station looked more crude and less polished.
  • At 0:52, the gate and the ice cube at the first lava rock puzzles originally had a different design.
  • A second later, although it can't be seen in full, the dilapidated log cabin has a very different interior design than the final.
  • And at 0:57, the background for the Snowdin shopkeeper was originally pretty different and slightly less polished.

Post-Release

2024

January

MyNewSoundtrack released two scrapped area themes for the game on January 11, 2024.

First Oasis Valley Theme

This was the song Oasis Valley theme at first, but it didn't really fit the vibe so Figburn and MasterSwordRemix took over and composed the final version that you can hear in game, which was a very good move in hindsight, fits much better.

I was always very proud of this one and decided to post it here so it doesn't become lost media lol

Powered Down Steamworks

A theme originally intended for Steamworks, composed by MasterSwordRemix and MyNewSoundtrack.

This was supposed to play from the moment you enter steamworks, until you press the switch and "Meltdown" plays.

Honestly Meltdown has a bigger impact when the previous track is just ambient noises so it was a very good decision overall, still had a lot of fun working on this one.
